Ware House Fumigation

Storage warehousing is of great importance to the fast developing businesses of today. It helps lessen the expense of
companies in having to transport all the goods to different places. Storage warehouses serve as depots for
merchandise or other parts for manufacturing companies.
Several pests may be found in warehouses but the common targets of warehouse pest control services can be grouped
into three : insects, and flying birds.
Insect pests are a whole range and may include weevils, several kinds of beetles and moths. The most common
however, is the warehouse beetle which attacks stored foods. A sign that a warehouse is infested with these beetles are
sighting of the adult insects in window sills and in spilled food in crevices and cracks. Their exact location. however,
maybe quite difficult to pinpoint as they tend to live inside food packages. Rodents, especially rats, are also a major
concern in different warehouses be it food clothes, paper or furniture. This is because rats have the high tendency to
gnaw through everything they can rest their teeth on and in food warehouse, they could spell contamination and tons

Good Fumigation Practices

Ø Inspection of Fumigation Site
Intact floor without cracks or drains Floor not undulated, no pebbles or stones Located in a safe working area. Well
ventilated, Sheltered area, rain and wind protected as for as possible.
Ø Preparation of Commodity
Stacked to allow good circulation leaving enough space around (2 m). Impervious wrapping removed or slashed.
Commodity not impervious to fumigant Not forbidden commodity.
Ø Preparation and installation of equipment
Vaporizer filled with water and beating. Sheets of correct size & specification, Gas distribution line installed. Gas
sampling tubes installed (minimum of 3 per enclosure & 1 per container) Fan installed and working checked (one in
each container and 2 per enclosure) Cover the enclosure with sheet and make gas-tight sealing at the ground area and
place dangerous signs.
Ø Preparation to gas enclosure & Application of gas to enclosure
Ensure risk area and surrounds free of un protected personnel (up to 3m) Turn on fans, Test on fans, Test leak checker
for working wear and test the respirator for correct fitness. Position calculated gas cans and connect to inlet of
vaporizer and the out let to gas distribution line. Release gas and test fittings for gas leak and correct if necessary.
Check vaporizer water boiling. Release required quantity of gas from the cylinder or dispenser. Check for hot gassing
. Check for gas leakages around enclosure and correct leakages if any.
Ø Initial Monitoring Turn off fan after 30 min. Measure gas levels on all monitor lines Check to ensure all readings are
above standard Calculate if equilibrium achieved Turn-on fans if necessary-repeat until equilibrium achieved Ensure
levels still above standard-record and document.
Ø End point monitoring
Measure gas levels on all monitor lines check to ensure all levels above standard carry out “top-up” procedures, if
appropriate Declare fumigation successful or failed as appropriate-document.
Ø De-gassing Ensure risk area and surrounds free of un protected personnel (up to 3 m) Turn-on fans Wear gas mask
and test for fitness Open enclosure and allow ventilation. Test for Thresh hold limit value (TLV)- continue aeration
until gas level below TLV Remove warning signs and risk area demarcation.
Ø Documentation Complete all documentation and release fumigated goods after ensuring gas-free
 Prophylactic Treatment
Food grains have to be stored for varying periods due to its seasonal production, food
security concerns and for seed purposes. In India, about 30% of the food grain
production is stored in the urban sector by government and private agencies, while the
remaining 70% remains with the grower.

In storage, food loss in mainly due to insects, rodents and fungi. In India, estimates of
food loss in transit and storage vary from 15 to 25%

Fumigation is curative measure : once the fumigation sheets are withdrawn, the
commodity is exposed to reinfestation. Prophylactic treatment aims to eliminate the
chance of reinfestation.
