Introduction
This guide describes the setup for WorkshopPLUS delivery “Active Directory
Troubleshooting.”

The workshop labs use Virtual Server 2005 R2 Service Pack 1 as a virtualization
platform for the lab virtual machines. The labs do not at this time use Hyper-V, Virtual
PC 2007, or Windows Virtual PC.

Note: The images that are used are running out-dated and disabled anti-virus software, so
these images cannot be attached to any customer’s production network or any public
network. The final configuration of the student computers does require network
connectivity in the classroom. This does not require a connection to any network outside
the classroom or Internet access.

Note: The virtual machines used in this workshop are activated via KMS. The activation
is good for 180 days. If a VM complains that it needs to be reactivated, you can use
slmgr.vbs with the rearm option. This provides a 30-day grace period.

Usage: slmgr.vbs –rearm at a command prompt in the VM.

The VMs stored on the FSU servers are refreshed every few months to avoid
issues with reactivation. Note that rearm can only be used 3 times, so the best
practice is to get the VMs for each delivery from FSU (and not to store them
elsewhere).

Contact WSKU if you have issues with activation. If you are using Classroom-in-
a-Box computers and have issues of any kind, use the contact information that
came with the CIAB computer shipment to report any issues.

Classroom Equipment and Requirements

This course requires:
 One computer for the instructor.
 One computer for each student.
 A networked classroom. “Networked” means that the computers in the classroom
are networked so they can communicate with the instructor’s computer. The
workshop does not require Internet access or network access outside the
classroom. There are more details on network requirements below.
 It is very useful if the student computers each have 2 monitors.
 The virtual machines for the lab exercises require Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1.
 The operating system for the student and instructor computers can be Windows
XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Server 2008. Any of
these will run Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1. However, Virtual Server will not run
on Windows 7.

Computer Requirements
1. One of the following 32 or 64-bit operating systems. 64-bit is preferred since
it can utilize more system memory.

 Windows Server 2003, with latest Service Pack

 Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, with latest Service
Pack
 Windows XP or Windows Vista, with latest Service Pack

Note: Since the virtual machines for the labs use Virtual Server 2005 R2
SP1, and since Windows 7 does not support this application, Windows 7
cannot be used for student or instructor computers.

2. File System: NTFS

3. Minimum 2.4 GHZ processor (dual or more processors is better)
4. Minimum of 80 GB free disk space
5. At least 3 GB of RAM (More is better)
6. DVD drive
7. VGA Monitor displaying over 1024x768 resolution

Classroom Networking Requirements

1. A network adapter is required for each computer. Wired or wireless is okay.
Classroom computers MUST be networked to each other and to the instructor
computer. However, it is not necessary for the classroom computers to
connect to any outside network or the Internet. In fact, Internet access is
discouraged for this workshop.
2. The instructor’s computer requires a wired connection to the classroom
network. The instructor’s computer CANNOT use a wireless network. The
instructor will be running a virtual machine on his computer that students
Microsoft Services Microsoft Confidential WorkshopPLUS
Page 6 of 31

must connect to during the workshop. Since most wireless network adapters
do not support promiscuous mode (allowing both the instructor’s host
computer and the instructor’s virtual machine to simultaneously access the
network), the instructor’s computer requires a wired network connection.
3. Student PCs must be disconnected from corporate LAN and Internet after
setting up the classroom environment / images files. Student PCs must be
networked within the classroom. If a DHCP server is not available in the
classroom (such as when you are using a wireless router with DHCP
capabilities), please configure the student PCs with appropriate IP addresses.
4. All PCs must be on the same subnet.

If you have a DHCP server in the classroom, you can use this for TCP/IP
configuration. If not, the best solution is still to configure all machines to use
DHCP. If a DHCP Server is not available, all machines will use Automatic
Private IP Addressing (APIPA), which will give machines unique IP
addresses in the 169.254.x.x range. In most cases, no further IP configuration
will be required. However, if you need to configure IP addresses manually,
use the 169.254.x.x range. The WPLMS virtual machine that students will
connect to is set to use DHCP and so will fall back to APIPA if not DHCP
server is available, and it will assign itself an address in this range. Note that
APIPA will not work properly if there is a routed environment in the
classroom (that is, a router separates student computers) so you will need to
configure IP addresses manually.

Note for WorkshopPLUS Accredited Trainers: The WPLMS VM is

configured to use DHCP by default. But you configure it to use a static IP
address if necessary. If you’re having trouble connecting to http://wplms in
the classroom, even from your host OS, make sure you’ve configured the
WPLMS VM (in the Virtual PC configuration) to use your network adapter.
By default it’s set to Shared NAT to avoid issues if you bring up the VM on
Microsoft’s internal network. No computers will be able to connect to
http://wplms unless you configure it to use your host computer’s network
adapter. Shared NAT, Loopback, or other settings will prevent network
connectivity.

Additional Considerations for Microsoft Sites

If the classroom has access to the Microsoft Corporate Network, that access
must be disconnected. The instructor PC will run a virtual machine called
WPLMS on the classroom network. Since several workshops might be
scheduled at the same time globally, you'll start seeing name conflicts if the
different classrooms are on the same network.

Virtualization Software Requirements

1. Each computer requires a virtualization application, Virtual Server 2005
R2 SP1. Detailed installation instructions are included later in this
document.

Microsoft Services Microsoft Confidential WorkshopPLUS

2. Each computer requires the VMRCPlus application. Installation

instructions are included later in this document.

3. The virtual machines in this workshop are not supported for use with
Virtual PC 2007, Windows Virtual PC (Windows 7), or Hyper-V. Using
these VMs with these virtualization platforms will require the VMs to be
reactivated. The VMs are activated through a Key Management Server.
For more information on KMS, search for key management server on
http://social.technet.microsoft.com.

Other Software Requirements

These requirements apply to instructor and student computers.
 Internet Explorer (Version 7 or newer). This can be downloaded from
www.microsoft.com.
 Adobe Flash Player (Version 7 or newer). This can be downloaded from
www.adobe.com.
 Note for WorkshopPLUS Accredited Trainers: If you are setting up
the classroom, note that you have a installable copy of Adobe Flash
Player in the ISO image file for your workshop’s WPLMS files
(electronic assessments and evaluations). Check the
Resources_Trainers_and_Coordinators\ISO_for_WPLMS folder for
your workshop on \\fsu\shares\wsku\materials\en.

Required Classroom Equipment

 An overhead projection unit that is capable of generating a minimum of a 3-foot
by 6-foot display at a resolution of 1024x768 or higher
 One dry erase whiteboard (larger size is preferable)
 At least 2 working dry erase markers (black and red) and a dry eraser

Optional Equipment
 Freestanding flip chart with narkers
 Laser pointer

Virtual Machine Files For Workshop Labs (for Instructor and all
Student Computers)
The virtual machine files for the workshop labs are located on the Microsoft
corporate network in the same directory as this setup guide:

\\fsu\shares\wsku\Materials\EN\Active_Directory_Troubleshooting_v3.0\Lab_Sof
tware

In this folder you will find a VMs_Split folder that contains the compressed
virtual machine files.

Microsoft Services Microsoft Confidential WorkshopPLUS

The VM files are archived in a WinRar self-extracting, split archive. After

download, you extract the files by running the ADTS_VMs_v3.0.part0001.exe
file in the VM file folder.

Note: The version number is very likely to change over time.

Virtual Machine Files For WorkshopPLUS Learning Management

System (WPLMS – for Instructor Computer only!)
The instructor will typically already have these files. However, if you are setting
up the instructor’s computer, the virtual machine files for WPLMS are located on
the Microsoft corporate network:

\\fsu\shares\wsku\Materials\EN\Resources_Trainer_Candidates\WPLMS_for_Vis
ta-W2K3-VPC2007

You do not need the whole folder. This folder contains the virtual machine files as
well as some training files for new trainers. The files you need are a split Winrar
archive, beginning with the file called WPLMS.part001.exe. You need all the
files that begin with “WPLMS.part” and there are 127 files (this number can
change over time as we revise the VM).

Workshop Files for the Instructor Computer Only

The instructor will typically already have the necessary files. However, if you
need to obtain the files for the instructor, they are found here:

\\fsu\shares\WSKU\Materials\EN\Active_Directory_Troubleshooting_v3.0\Traine
r_Materials_Part_1_of_2

Copy all files, including the ISO_For_WPLMS folder and its files, to C:\ADTS
Instructor Material on the instructor’s computer.

File Locations on Classroom Computers

Here are the locations where you should put the workshop files on the instructor and
student computers.

Setup Instructions
This workshop uses Microsoft’s Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 as the virtualization
platform for the lab’s virtual machines.

To avoid any mistakes, it would be best to prepare a single machine and then ghost the
machine to deploy the image on other PCs.

All virtual machines from this workshop are configured to use 512 MB of RAM. Since
several VMs will be run simultaneously, this explains why a minimum of 3 GB of RAM
is required.

If the hosting computer has only 2 GB of RAM, all VMs need to be reconfigured to use
256 MB RAM.

Task 1: Install Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1

If Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 is not installed on the instructor / student PC, you need
to install this.

NOTE: You can install Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows
Vista, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Server 2008. In each case you must ensure
that Internet Information Server is installed (through Control Panel) before installing
Virtual Server.

You can download Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 32 bits from the following URL:
Download Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 today
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/bb738033.aspx

NOTE: You can use either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Virtual Server. If the host
OS is 32-bit, use the 32-bit version. If 64-bit, use the 64-bit version.

After selecting Setup.exe or choosing to Run setup during download:

1. Accept all the defaults.
2. If you install Virtual Server on Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, or Windows
Server 2008, you will also need to install an update for Virtual Server.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A79BCF9B-59F7-
480B-A4B8-FB56F42E3348&displaylang=en

Before you install the update, you’ll save time if you open Services in
Administator Tools and stop the Virtual Server service.

3. Additionally, if you install Virtual Server on Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V
has been enabled, Hyper-V will need to be disabled and the host computer
rebooted before Virtual Server will run.
4. Add the hostname to the intranet security zone in Internet Explorer to stop being
prompted for user name and password when opening the web site in IE.

Task 5: Activating Virtual Machine Remote Control (VMRC)

VMRC provides a better interface for using the virtual machines. So you need to activate
the VMRC server.

1. Under Virtual Server, select Server Properties.

Microsoft Services Microsoft Confidential WorkshopPLUS

2. Select Virtual Machine Remote Control (VMRC) Server.

3. In VMRC Server Properties, select the checkbox Enable, ensure that the
TCP/IP port used is 5900, set the Default screen resolution to 1024 x 768, and
click OK.

Task 6: Add the WPLMS Virtual Machine to Virtual Server on the

Instructor Computer Only (if you are configuring the instructor
computer)
Follow the same steps you used earlier to add the lab virtual machines to the Virtual
Serve console and VMRCPlus. The WPLMS virtual machine should be in C:\WPLMS.
When you add the VM to Virtual Server, use C:\WPLMS\wplms.vmc as the path to the
VM to add.

By default, the VM will be configured to use “Private Network” in Network Adapter

settings. Change this to use the instructor computer’s network adapter (the adapter
connected to the classroom network). Students will need to connect to the WPLMS VM
during the workshop.

The default configuration setup is shown below:

Task 8: Install and Configure Internet Explorer (or Verify the Installed
Version)
Internet Explorer version 6.0 or later is required on each student PC. If you need to install
Internet Explorer, you can download it from www.microsoft.com.
Check the Protected Mode security settings. Student computers need to be able to connect
to a SharePoint site on the trainer’s comnputer and run an Adobe Flash application. This
requires one of two configurations:
 Protected Mode needs to be turned off for Local intranet sites.
 OR http://wplms needs to be added to Trusted sites and Protected Mode must be
turned off for Trusted sites.

To check this, in Internet Explorer open Tools > Internet Options and click the Security
tab. Enable Protected Mode should be unchecked for Local Intranet. If it is enabled and
cannot be disabled, check the Trusted sites zone. Protected Mode is not typically enabled
for Trusted sites. You will need to add http://wplms to the list of Trusted sites.

Task 9: Install Adobe Flash Player (or Verify the Installed Version)
Adobe Flash Player version 7 or later is required on each student PC. If you need to
install the player, you can download it from www.adobe.com.

Microsoft Services Microsoft Confidential WorkshopPLUS

Note for WorkshopPLUS Accredited Trainers: If you are setting up the classroom,
note that you have a installable copy of Adobe Flash Player in the ISO image file for your
workshop’s WPLMS files (electronic assessments and evaluations). Check the
Resources_Trainers_and_Coordinators\ISO_for_WPLMS folder for your workshop on
\\fsu\shares\wsku\materials\en.

Task 10: Network Student PCs and Trainer PC

Student PCs Must Be Networked
Each student PC must be connected to a classroom network. All that is needed is wired or
wireless connections to one or more hubs/switches.

Trainer PC Must Use a Wired Connection

The trainer PC will host a SharePoint site running within a virtual machine using Virtual
PC. Virtual PC requires a wired connection to work properly, so at least the trainer PC
must be wired. You could physically connect the trainer PC to a wireless hub. The rest of
the classroom can be wired, wireless, or a combination of both.

All PCs Must Be on the Same Subnet

If you have a DHCP server in the classroom, you can use this for TCP/IP configuration.
If not, the best solution is still to configure all machines to use DHCP. If a DHCP Server
is not available, all machines will use Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA), which
will give machines unique IP addresses in the 169.254.x.x range. In most cases, no
further IP configuration will be required. However, if you need to configure IP addresses
manually, use the 169.254.x.x range. The WPLMS virtual machine that students will
connect to is set to use DHCP and so will fall back to APIPA if not DHCP server is
available, and it will assign itself an address in this range. Note that APIPA will not work
properly if there is a routed environment in the classroom (that is, a router separates
student computers) so you will need to configure IP addresses manually.

Internet Access is NOT Needed

Most classrooms do not have Internet access, and Internet access is not needed for this
setup.

Additional Considerations for Microsoft Sites

If the classroom has access to the Microsoft Corporate Network, that access must be
disconnected. The trainer PC will run a virtual machine called WPLMS on the classroom
network. Since several workshops might be scheduled at the same time globally, you'll
start seeing name conflicts if the different classrooms are on the same network.

Lab setup is now complete!
