Solubility - Grade 7 Chemistry

Investigation

Title of the project: An Investigation on solubility of a solute in a given solvent.

What is the project about?

Solutions are a special kind of mixture. Solubility is a term used to describe the number of
materials (solids, liquids, or gas) which can be dissolved in a solvent to make a solution.
The research aspect of this science investigation is to test the effect of temperature on the
solubility of a substance in a solvent.

Prior knowledge:
 Definition of solute, solvent, solution and solubility.
 Factors affecting the rate of solubility.

Research Question:
 How does temperature affect solubility of a given solute in a given solvent?

Hypothesis:

Hypothesis: -As the temperature of the solvent increases there will be more
amount of solute dissolved in the solvent which increase the solubility of the
solute. That means that the solute can be mixed faster in hot water than cold
water.

Variables:
What is your Controlled variable?
What is your Dependent variable?
What is your independent
variable?

Materials required:
List the material required.

Experimental procedure: List the steps here.

1. Write your hypothesis on a piece of paper

2. Get all of the different solute (Refrigerated water, Tap water, Warm water and Boiling water
3. Put 1 tablespoon of solute into one of the solvents each, start the timer the exact second you put the solute
in the solvent and mix until it gets dissolved
4. Write your different timings and temperature on the paper
5. Write your conclusions and see how different was your hypothesis from your conclusion.

Data collection:

Solvent (50 ml) at different temp Amount of solute dissolved in teaspoons

tablespoons
Refrigerated water
Tap water (room temp)
Warm water
Boiling water

Data analysis:

Draw a graph - Solvent temp along x-axis and amount of solute dissolved along y-axis.

Observations: List your observations and suggest scientific reason for each of
your observations.

The water dissolved faster in hot water slower than in cold water
- This happens because the heat makes the solute particles move faster and
make it easily dissolve in the water
- Therefore, the water can be easily mixed faster in hot water than cold water

Conclusion: Refer to your hypothesis and answer the research question.

As the temperature of the solvent increases there will be more amount of solute
dissolved in the solvent which increase the solubility of the solute. That means
that the solute can be mixed faster in hot water than cold water.

Areas for improvement:

To do the experiment in a better place (Because the cold water might get warm)
