SUMMARY
As Esri’s offerings evolve to meet market needs, we are now offering ArcGIS as a Platform-as-
a-Service (PaaS). We will refer to this offering as ArcGIS Platform.

 Esri has used the term ArcGIS platform for many years to indicate that our software can be
extended and built on.
 Over the past few years, we started using ArcGIS platform with a lowercase p to indicate
that we are using this term in a general sense.
 Moving forward, we want to use the term ArcGIS Platform (with a capital P) to specifically
refer to the Platform-as-a-Service offering (PaaS) that Esri will be launching in early 2021.
 We will discontinue the use of ArcGIS platform (lowercase p) when used generically.
Instead, simply using ArcGIS is adequate.
 Using ArcGIS system is also appropriate when trying to communicate the idea that ArcGIS
is engineered from a common code base; is open, interoperable, scalable, and secure; and
comes with rich content. Other uses, as appropriate and depending on the context, are
ArcGIS technology or ArcGIS software.

How is ArcGIS Platform related to ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, and

ArcGIS Pro?
We think of ArcGIS as being offered in the following main ways:
- Software, i.e., ArcGIS Pro
- Server software, i.e., ArcGIS Enterprise
- Software-as-a-service (SaaS), i.e., ArcGIS Online

- Platform-as-a-service (PaaS), i.e., ArcGIS Platform, which is the new offering that Esri is
launching in January 2021

How would you define the new “ArcGIS Platform” term?

ArcGIS Platform is a platform-as-a-service, providing developers frictionless access to powerful
spatial content and capabilities. It’s highly performant and secure, and it scales as apps and
solutions grow. It provides the tools and infrastructure that allow developers to leverage it in
different ways. For example, non-GIS developers can access a stand-alone set of location
services without having to invest in a full technology stack, or a GIS Developer can extend
ArcGIS technology (e.g., customs tools for ArcGIS Pro).

What does the new ArcGIS Platform offering consist of?

The ArcGIS Platform consists of:
 Location services, which are the bedrock of the ArcGIS Platform. Some are
commoditized, like basemaps, geocoding, and routing. Some provide a competitive
advantage like GeoEnrichment, data hosting and data layers. Some are used primarily
by the GIS community but are gaining interest with non-GIS users, for example utility
network, elevation, and 3D.
 Developer API (REST) to access and use our location services
 A dashboard of tools, including detailed app usage metrics
 A Marketplace giving Esri partners the opportunity to provide their content, solutions,
and services to a large community of users
 A design system giving web developers the tools to design and build beautiful web
pages
 Client APIs to automate map creation and analyses and to create powerful location-
based web and native apps.
 Esri Open Source APIs that include REST-JS and Esri Leaflet
 Support for 3rd party open source client APIs
 App builders that provide a low code environment for building apps
 A complete developer experience that includes SDK documentation and developer-
specific tools

Will Esri continue to offer the ArcGIS Developer subscription in addition to

ArcGIS Platform?
Yes. The ArcGIS Developer subscription will continue to exist for both developers who want to
use our stand-alone services and, more importantly, for developers extending ArcGIS.
The details of target markets, personas, and pricing will be available in other documents on
Compass soon.

Will Esri be updating the products page on Esri.com to reflect this evolving
way of positioning our offerings?
Yes. The product teams are already working with the web team and others to reflect this
positioning on our external website.

Do I need to go back and change the references to ArcGIS platform in

previous blog posts, articles, etc.?
No. We will apply this change moving forward. In most cases, simply using ArcGIS instead of
ArcGIS platform when talking about Esri’s software in a generic manner will be adequate.

When should I start using the new connotation?

You can stop using the ArcGIS platform term in its generic sense right away, and simply saying
ArcGIS in most cases. The new ArcGIS Platform term will start rolling out in January as this
offering is launched.

Is there a launch plan for ArcGIS Platform that I can reference?

Yes. The ArcGIS Platform launch plan document will be available on Compass soon.
