Break the Vices of the Children: Perception of Parents to their Children’s Vices at Silang,
Cavite
Introduction
This part highlights the established facts behind the research topic. It also stated some general
information and published findings which show relation to the study. At the same time, it also
includes the gap and the purpose for which the study was made.
Background of the Study
Vice or vices is a practice, behaviour, or habit generally considered immoral, sinful,
criminal, rude, taboo, depraved, or degrading in the associated society. In more minor usage, vice
could refer to a fault, a negative character trait, a defect, an infirmity, or a bad or unhealthy habit
(Ortillo, 2018). These vices were bad traits or what they called negative characteristics. Vices
were common among young males and females. There were examples of vices she added,
including prostitution, indecent dressing, robbery, cultism, pocket picking, drug addiction,
examination malpractice, hooliganism, gambling, smoking and pre-marital sexual activities.
Lack of parental care, having broken families, and curiosity were the causes of how children
involved with those vices. Another reason why teenagers engaged in using vices was the peer
pressure or the pressure they felt in the people around them. These may be an expectations or
plans that they need to meet to make the people around them proud. Peer pressure could lead to
anxiety, lack of self-confidence and feeling of someone is controlling your life and you do not
have your own freedom. Engagement in vices had an effect in the body and mental health of the
user. It could lead to illness, academic failure, and hallucinations.
Parents were the first people to have an influence on a child and to their values. Every
parents dream was to have a bright future and life for their children. Every parents’ goal was to
become their children a better version of themselves. Parents wanted their children to be a good-
mannered person that always loved, respected and welcomed everywhere by everyone. No
parents wants their children to engage in bad doings like vices. As a responsibility or by all their
love, a parent wanted to groom the child from all perspectives of life. But sometimes children
misunderstood and take it in a wrong way, the things which every parents’ did to make their
child’s life easy and close to perfect (Khan, 2017). Children’s misunderstood the things that
parent’s dream for them. These problems and misunderstandings might lead to misbehaviours
and rebellion. Parents felt bad and they were blaming themselves whenever their children did
bad things and engage in a situation that might bring their life in danger. They started
questioning their effectiveness as the guardians and as a parents. Parents who had a children
engage in using vices seeks a cure or a way to help their children’s stop this misdoings. Specific
knowledge about health and safety—including knowledge about how to access health care,
protect children from physical harm and promote good hygiene and nutrition—is a key parenting
competency (The National Academic Press, 2016)
Ortillo (2018) it is rare to find a school or an institution void of social vices. This depicts
that they are present in all educational centers from Primary, Secondary and Tertiary. This study
aimed to determine the perception of parents to their children’s vices. This study could help
parents to improve their awareness in raising their children and prevent children, specifically the
students’ bad habits or vices. It could also provide information to people or researcher who are
interested in this topic.
Problem Statement
Atkin, Hocing & Block (2006) said that students are the most common drinkers, smokers
and drug takers than the lay people which may be influenced by peer pressure, cheap bars and
the living away from home. There are studies states that as year passes, the rate of the teenagers
using vices are increasing; however, mostly are conducted abroad, and the Philippines remain
less explored. Hence, understanding the parents’ perception to their children’s vices can be
helpful in order to fill the gap.
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualitative study was to provide a clearer analysis of what were the
perception of parents in regard to the vices of their children. This research also seeks to study
how parents perceive their children's vices and what were their actions towards them. This study
could be a help to the parents' awareness about vices and how children's engaged in using it.
Research questions
This study aimed to answer the following question
1. What was the parent’s perception to its children’s vices?
2. What challenges do parents faced because their children had vices?
3. How do parents’ handle their children every time it engages in using vices?
Scope of the Study
This study focused on parents’ perception to the vices of their children. Parents should be
aware and have an idea on how to break the vices or what actions they should do to their children
nowadays specifically if their child is suffering in mental health. They might suffer because of
the different problems they encountered while growing up and one of these could be the lack of
attention given by the parents to them. Parents’ perception towards the misbehaviour and
engagement of the children in using vices could be a help to stop and avoid this misdoings again.
Limitations of the Study
This study was limited to parents of children ages 15 to 19, who has engaged in smoking,
drinking, and using vapes, and lived around Silang, Cavite.
Significance of the Study
This study is beneficial to the parents. This study could be a help to the parents'
awareness about vices. This study would also help parents’ knowledge about guiding and
parenting their child. This study was also beneficial to the children specifically to the students to
know their parent’s perception and feelings whenever they are engaging in these vices.
Theoretical Framework
This study was anchored by Students Vices Theory 2015 by Federicca Cucchiella. Many
causes of their vices were legitimate personal problems or family and parents issues. But vices
also could often be traced to other factors such as poor work environment. If such absences
became excessive they could have a seriously adverse impact on their academic performance.
The theory above related to our present study since it talked about vices.
