How accurate is the documentary in terms of the documentarian’s point of

view, bias of the film?

The content of the documentary is accurate; I have done my research and have
paralleled the details. Moreover the documentary was posted on February 2019 but
the incident happened way back 2012, the Sinking of the Concordia investigates
the events leading up to the cruise ship Costa Concordia, led by Francesco
Schettino, hitting a sandbar off the Italian island of Giglio. The utilization of
computer generated images, user generated content and testimonial, the
documentary recreates a minute by minute account of the tragic circumstance.
With exclusive interviews with survivors, rescuers and world renowned experts, it
explicitly shows accuracy.

The case is closed and the captain was found guilty and charged with multiple
crimes, so there is no need for further debate. However, what I’d like to know was
about the stand of the officers in deck. The documentary is accurate but as an
audience and a future seafarer I find it lacking.

Bias, because there is no complete presentation of details, there is no participation

of anyone on the bridge team which could have been crucial on informing he
audience. Though the captain is accounted responsible for what happened, an
interview of him or anyone on the bridge would have made the documentary fair
enough.

As regards SOLAS, STCW Convention Regulations, and other IMO

Regulations, what have you found interesting in the documentary? How was
this expounded/ clarified/presented to discount an issue of bias presentation?

Nobody would want to be on that situation, there are some points in the
documentary that you will witness a disappointing relay of information, where
evacuation personnel fails to tell the truth to the panicking passengers. The captain
first announced that everything is under control and no other than just an electrical
shutdown. Also, the conversation of the coastguard officer and captain of the ship,
as we dig deep into this tragedy we found out that the helmsman of the Costa
Concordia has difficulty in understanding English. There is also a video interview
of the captain where he expressed his side about what happened and his thoughts
about everything.

After the incident, SOLAS, STCW and IMO took it as an important lesson to
implement standards, competency and quality to meet the expectations of the
industry. In connection with this accident, it became clear that some of the
personnel on the ship did not have the necessary knowledge about how to manage
passengers in an emergency, the STCW further amended Requirement for safety
familiarisation for all personnel on passenger ships.

Who would you like to invite into your audience and who is excluded, why?

We would like to invite seafarers and aspiring seafarers to view the

documentary for further analysis and to know whether we will have the same point
of view after watching. Also for them to be aware of the important points that are
crucial in safety of life, this will be a reminder for everyone that if such prevailing
circumstances occur they will be knowledgeable enough. Same applies to the
administration and legal maritime organizations in order for them to take
advantage of this incident and to improve the standards.

We would exclude the sensitive Italians for this and individual who find this
documentary horrifying, also to the passengers who survived and the families of
the bereaved. It might be hard for them to cope if they tried viewing this
documentary. Nobody would want to be in that situation and hoping that this
incident won’t happen again.
