ENCOUNTER
By Mary Rose Gonzales
It was four in the morning when I was awakened by the frightening wailing of the
ferocious winds—which reminded me of the most tragic event in my life.
It did not allow me to sleep again, so I took a shower instead. As I was on my way to the
orphanage, I expected the streets to be deserted because of the COVID-19. However, I heard a
constant sniffing of a child, like he was resisting tears. I turned my gaze, and a little boy dressed
in torn clothes caught my eyes. I approached him and asked, “Hey buddy, what are you doing
here?” He looked at me with teary eyes and said, “My family died because of the virus.”
I was shocked. For a moment, a deafening silence ate the atmosphere. I started biting on
my lower lip and felt the wet hot tears fill up my eyes as I remembered how I lost my family to
the storm eight years ago. Although I know that hugs and words would not take away his pain, I
still did those to make him feel that he is not alone. After that, I invited him to come with me
and go home since I remembered that I saw him in the orphanage before. When we arrived,
Sister Agnes greeted me with a smile and gratefully welcomed the boy again.
Since then, I visit the orphanage frequently to check on him. I guess we uniquely found
a family on our first encounter.
