Midterm Test
June 19, 2014
Duration: 60 minutes
Evaluation: 25% Dr. Faisal Khan & Dr. Nima Khakzad
a. A system has three components with reliability 0.3, 0.4 and 0.7; the system reliability is
calculated as 1.4. Is it correct? (1%)
b. What is the main difference between MTTF and MTBF besides the abbreviation? (1%)
a. How MTTF and hazard rate function are related to each other for a constant failure rate system?
(1%)
b. Is it true that for a component in burn-in region (i.e., λ(t) is decreasing) the increase in the burn-
in time will increase the conditional reliability. Provide evidence? (1%)
t − µ
Φ
c. For a mechanical component, the cumulative failure function is given as: σ , what would be
the reliability function? (1%)
Q2. Two experts are asked to calculate the reliability of a product at the end of its useful life. One
expert assesses the reliability as 0.98 while the other assesses as 0.60. Assume both experts are
considered equally credible. That is, there is a 50/50 chance that each expert is correct. Calculate
the probability that the experts are correct in the following situations:
a. The product is tested for useful life and does not fail.
b. Two tests are performed and both are successful.
(5%, 10 min)
Q3. An electric system is repeatedly subjected to a constant power surge (load) in constant time
intervals. The electric system has a constant failure probability, p, under each single power surge.
Prove that reliability of system under above specified condition follow exponential distribution
(constant failure rate).

Q4. An automobile engine has four critical belts each showing wear-out effects following Weibull
distributions. The shape parameters are the same as 1.34, while the scale parameters are 2500,
3400, 8000, and 6100 operating hours. If the car has been in use for 4000 hr, what is the
probability of a car failure (due to belt failure) during the next 72 hour of use? (Hint: conditional
probability).
(5%, 10 min)
Q5. The wear-out of a machine part is normally distributed with 90 percent of the failures occurring
between 200 and 270 hr of use (i.e., 5 % below 200 hr and 5% above 270 hr.)
a. Find the MTTF and the standard deviation of the failure time.
b. What is the reliability if the part is to be used for 210 hr?
c. Determine the design life if no more than 1 percent of failures should occur prior to the design
life?
