Temperature Gradient For Plates

This document discusses applying linear and non-linear temperature gradients in MIDAS Civil. It explains that the temperature gradient command should only be used for complete sectional temperature, not partial sections. It then demonstrates using a dummy beam element with the beam section temperature command to apply a non-linear gradient to plate elements. The stresses and displacements between this method and a simple beam model are nearly identical, showing this is an effective way to model non-linear temperature gradients in plates.

Question

• Temperature gradient for plate is not

giving result as expected. Temperature
Gradient command of midas Civil is
used.
Thickness: 0.5m, Width: 1.0m
– Case 1: Hz = 0.50m T2 – T1 = 10oC
– Case 2: Hz = 0.25m T2 – T1 = 10oC
I was expecting lesser moment and forces in
second case since lesser part is loaded. But
its giving higher results! Why?

Temperature Gradient

• Temperature gradient command

shouldn’t be used for partial sectional
temperature. It is applicable for
complete height only.
Section Case 1 Case 2
1m 5oC 10oC
Provided Input
5oC What it actually means
0.5m
-5oC

-5oC -10oC

• Thus, the overall force acting in case 2

would be more than case 1.

Non-Linear Temperature Gradient

• This can be applied to Beam element

only using the Beam Section
Temperature command.
• So, can it be applied to plates? If yes,
how??
• Lets consider a simple example.

Non-Linear Temperature Gradient

• This can be applied to Beam element

only using the Beam Section
Temperature command.
• So, can it be applied to plates? If yes,
how?? Lets consider a simple example.
Section as below and length of 20m.

Non-Linear Temperature Gradient

• 2 models are generated to compare:

– Plate element of 0.5m thickness, 1m length
and 0.5m width. Dummy beam at mid to
apply Beam Section Temperature.
Dummy beam element to apply the beam section temperature command.
Plate elements on either side.

– Beam element of 1m length and section size

of 0.5m x 1m.

Non-Linear Temperature Gradient

• Displacement comparison:

Axial Deformation (mm)

Vertical Deformation (mm)

Non-Linear Temperature Gradient

• Stress Comparison:

Plate Top & Bottom Stresses (MPa)

Beam Top & Bottom Stresses (MPa)

• Near the support, due to transverse interaction,

the stresses have minor variation as compared to
simple beam model. However, the maximum
change in magnitude is just about 2.5%.

Conclusion

• Dummy beam method could definitely

be used to apply temperature loads to
plate for partial height.
• Dummy beam could be a very minor
section (Say, a rod of 1mm dia), however
the material E should be of actual beam.
• Beam section temperature has to be
applied with actual width and height to
this dummy beam.
