According to the United Nations, "green jobs" consist of work that primarily

contributes to preserving or restoring environmental quality. Such jobs accomplish

this through a number activities that include: reducing energy or materials
consumption, minimizing waste or pollution, de-carbonizing businesses, and
protecting ecosystem

Green-collar jobs involve work in the clean energy sector performed by solar
engineers, wind technicians and battery experts while new-collar jobs are focused
on technology, cyber security and coding.

Overall proportion of informal workers in total employment - has remained relatively stable, at around 92 per cent

79 per cent of non-agricultural wage workers had no written contract and only 23.8 per cent were eligible for social security
benefits.
Occupations most in demand across industries in a global energy sustainability scenario, 2030

The ILO also estimates that in working towards a circular economy, a net total of between 7 and 8 million new
jobs will be created by 2030, as compared to a business-as-usual scenario (ibid.). The extension of these
estimates shows that in the circular economy scenario, nearly 78 million jobs will be created and almost 71
million destroyed

It can be estimated that somewhere between 40 to 45 million people today must be unemployed in India. And
this number does not capture the true extent of unemployment in the country. Given India’s level of economic
development and lack of social security benefits, relatively few people can afford to stay unemployed. So, there is
bound to be a significant prevalence of disguised unemployment, that is, people are working below their
potential.

COVID -19 and the State of

India’s Labour Market

Move over, blue- and white-collar

jobs: The workforce colour spectrum
is expanding

Think of the mechanic who now needs to understand the fundamentals of computer

science in order to fix a car. Or the allied health professional who will be most
effective if they can apply data science-driven insights to their work tracking positive
COVID-19 test rates. Or the construction worker using sophisticated imaging tools to
prepare a site for a new wind farm.
None of these are really white- or blue-collar jobs. We might think of them, instead,
as gray-collar (at the intersection of manufacturing and technology), pink-collar
(allied health and the care economy) and green-collar (clean energy).

Asia’s aspiring ‘green-collar’ workers hope for jobs in Covid recovery

The “Green Collar” portal, which lists jobs from renewable energy to farming and climate
change, is billed as the first such initiative in Southeast Asia, a disaster-prone region that
often comes under threats from floods to typhoons.

Letter: Green jobs should be at

centre of recovery plans
We need to provide training on the job to support the energy transition and start
refocusing skillsets towards green roles now. Taking time out of work to complete
training and development will start to close gaps in areas where skills can be
transferred.

Boris Johnson, the UK prime minister, has promised a “green

industrial revolution” which he says will “create and support” up to
250,000 British jobs.

5 Green Collar Jobs of the Future

Through 2026, solar panel installers and wind turbine technicians are expected to
be the fastest growing jobs in the US. With increased use of those renewable
sources of energy, energy auditors help businesses and households repair leaks to
ensure that energy is put to good use. Among the most impactful green collar jobs
of today is that of the chief sustainability officer. These executives set the tone for
their organizations on matters of environmental conservation and strategies to
further incorporate sustainable business practices into the company's operations.
