Iot Story Assignment 1

The document proposes a smart sewing system using IoT sensors to streamline operations in the sewing department. The system uses temperature, pressure, ultrasonic, leak, light, and position sensors along with a touchscreen panel and rotating needle holder. It allows operators to customize settings, replaces the sewing pedal with pressure sensors, selects needles based on fabric, detects defects and operator fatigue, adjusts lighting, and monitors machine health to improve efficiency, productivity, and reduce costs. All sensor data is collected and analyzed on a central database to provide real-time insights into machine, worker and department performance.

SEE THROUGH SEW

FROM: KARTIK, MOHAMMED, SHANTNU (DFT-5)

PURPOSE : STREAMLINE THE PROCESS OF THE SEWING DEPARMENT USING IOT.
COMPONENT: TEMPERATURE, PRESSURE, ULTRASONIC, LEAK, LIGHT, POSITION (SENSORS)
TOUCHSCREEN PANEL, ROTATING NEEDLE HOLDER.

As the panels enter the sewing department, the operator enters his unique code into the
sewing machine(touchscreen panel) to enable his personalized settings (like thread tension,
speed, etc.). Age old sewing pedal has been replaced by the pressure sensors to control speed
and reduce continuous stress, making it ergonomically viable. The operator selects the type
of fabric that need to be sewn and accordingly appropriate needle is selected by the system.

Growing gradually into the day, our operators faces fatigue which can hamper his ability to
stitch with consistent quality and might hurt himself in the process. This will be dealt by
ultrasonic proximity sensor which will beep when operator hands come too close the needle
and a position sensor will help him in maintaining the quality throughout the day as set by the
control department. Furthermore, there will various light sensors embedded in the sewing
department to adjust lighting according to the environment improving the overall efficiency
of the operators. There will be a defect sensor that will catch the stitching defects like loose
thread, skip stitch, puckering, etc. during the process of sewing.

Along with all these there are temperature and leak sensors embedded in the machines which
look after the health of the machine. Whenever there is an oil leak or lubricant/oil levels are
not optimum the sensor will indicate towards correcting them. Also, if due to any reason
temperature of machine rises above safety level, again the sensor will be activated. This will
prevent machine breakdown and improve machine life.

Every individual machine will have its record i.e. worker idle time, down time, average speed,
garment output, which helps us to spot unproductive operators and make immediate
changes helping us to reduce the need on manual checks and save on labour costs. The data
collected will be used for effective planning to combat the problems like over-production,
delays, inventory management, overtime fraud and help us devise suitable incentives for
operators while having a real-time view of the department.

All these features come to life using a proprietary central database system which allows us to
gain valuable insights about the individual machines, workers and, the entire department
which provides better control over variables to increase efficiency and productivity output.
