The Brain
The human brain is complicated. Your brain controls everything about you. It
keeps your heart beating. It tells your body how to move. It keeps your body at the
right temperature. It helps you see, feel, taste, hear and smell. Your brain stores your
memories. It is the place where all your thoughts and ideas begin.
5 The brain is not very big. This is surprising since it does so much but only weighs
about three pounds (1.4kg). It makes up less than two percent of your whole body.
Yet, without this critical organ, nothing in your body would work.
How does the brain do all of its work?
It sends messages to every part of the
10 body by using neurons, or nerve cells.
Neurons use a linking method, called
synapses, to send information from
the brain to other parts of the body.
Synapses are the tiny spaces
15 between neurons. More than 100
billion neurons are in your brain. They
send commands across a quadrillion synapses.
Even when you are asleep, your brain works. It makes you dream. It tells your
heart to keep beating and your lungs to keep breathing. It wakes you if you hear a
20 loud noise, if you feel something strange, or if you had enough sleep.
