ORNAMENTAL PLANTS
• The Philippines is home to unique ornamental plants and flower species.
• Our tropical climate is suitable for year-round cultivation of ornamental horticultural products.
• This is one of the reasons why Filipinos like to maintain gardens with a variety of flowers.
Ornamental plants typically require meticulous care to achieve the best results. They are usually planted
particularly for the enjoyment of the home gardener.
• These ornamental plants are categorized according to their distinguished features in which size, form,
or even fruit are considered.
• The following are examples of the different categories of plants:
1. ORNAMENTAL TREES
✓ Ornamental plants possess a limitless variety of beauty.
✓ Some of them bloom with ordinary flowers, while others attract with a display of their floral features.
✓ Along roadsides, boulevards and avenues, in gardens and parks, trees enhance the beauty of the
surrounding and provide cooler atmosphere.
2. SHRUBS
✓ Shrubs are upright, bushy and woody plants, less than 5 meters in height and with more than one trunk.
✓ Plants or shrubs are different from trees because trees have a distinguishable trunk and large size.
✓ Shrubs are called ornamental plants, which are great idea for landscaping and interior decorating.
• SAMPAGUITA
✓ It is a spreading semi-climbing shrub, attaining a height of 1 1 1/2 meters.
The leaves are in pairs. The fragrant flowers are white, starlike, in clusters
formed at the tip of a branch. It is known as our National Flower.
• ROSES
✓ It is known as the "Queen of Flowers," and one of the most-loved plants.
✓ The rose is a prickly shrub.
✓ The leaves are compound with 3 to 11 paired leaflets.
✓ The flowers vary in form, color and fragrance.
• GUMAMELA
✓ It is one of the most common garden shrubs that live in almost any type of
soil and with little care.
✓ It is an erect, many-branched shrub, 1 to 4 meters high.
✓ Blooming of the flower is controlled by temperature, which is why it is
seldom used in flower arrangement.
• SAN FRANCISCO (Sagilala)
• POINSETTIA
✓ It conveys a joyous Christmas Spirit. Also known as Christmas plant, the modified
leaves subtending the terminal flower clusters are bright red and smaller than the
regular leaves.
• SANTAN
✓ It is popular because its flowers bloom throughout the year of band requires little
care. The flowers may be yellow or orange, and without fragrance. The petals are
united into a slender tube about 2.5 cm long.
• ROSAL
✓ It is a many-branched tropical shrub, 1 to 2 meters tall, with fragrant white
flowers.
✓ Although it is one of the most beautiful flowering shrubs, it is not frequently
cultivated.
✓ The leaves are shiny and petioled, while the flowers are bell-shaped.
• ADELFA (baladre)
✓ It is an erect, smooth shrub. The fragrant flowers are funnel shaped. There are
single and double flower forms with white, pink, red, and salmon flowers.
3. HERBS
✓ Herb serves various purposes in landscaping and decorations.
✓ Like shrubs, their value lies on the color or combination of colors of leaves.
✓ Herbs are often annual plants of various sizes and habits of growth, with little or no woody tissues.
4. VINES
✓ Vines especially the woody species, comprise a group of ornamental plants adapted to different
landscaping situations for giving varied effect of form, texture, and color.
✓ In the Philippines, as in other tropical countries, there is a wide range of vines.
✓ Because of their attractive foliage and flowers, they can transform unsightly shade trees and poles,
undesirable architectural line, protective walls and fences into pleasant features of landscape.
✓ Many kinds are suited to cling for support on various types of trellises, fences, and walls.

There are so many more varied species of ornamental plants; many are named, while some others are still
unnamed. The colors, texture, different forms, and sizes of flower and leaves contribute a lot to the
beautification of our surroundings, even inside our homes.

The four categories of ornamental plants are trees, shrubs, herbs, and vines.
A tree has a woody trunk, spread branches, with leaves, bears flowers and fruits. Usually tall,
about five meters and sometimes higher.
Shrubs are upright, bushy and woody plants which is less than 5 meters in height, and with more
than one trunk.
Ornamental herbs are often annual plants of various sizes and habits of growth, with little or no
woody tissues.
Ornamental vines are climber-plants with soft woody stem.
African Tulip, Palawan Cherry Tree, Caballero, and Alibangbang are examples of ornamental trees
that can make surroundings beautiful and colorful.
Flowering plants such as sampaguita, rose, santan, rosal, adelfa, poinsettia, and gumamela belong
to the shrub category, which adds color to gardens, parks and even private family gardens.
Corazon de Maria and Mayana are ornamental herbs that are very attractive to have in landscape
designs because of their heart-shape leaves.
Sprenger asparagus gives body to a flower arrangement because of its shape and form.
The cosmos plants are commonly used in parks because of their different color of flowers.
Ornamental vines are hanging plants with beautiful and colorful flowers.
