This document outlines a classroom observation of a Mathematics 8 lesson on systems of linear inequalities in two variables. The lesson objectives are to solve problems involving systems of linear inequalities, determine if coordinates are solutions, and graph the inequalities. The lesson includes an activity with true/false statements, an explanation of graphing systems of inequalities, an application problem, and a short assessment. Key steps in graphing systems are identifying solutions, plotting inequalities on a coordinate plane, shading regions of overlap/non-overlap, and determining if points satisfy all inequalities.

I. Objectives: At the end of this presentation, discussion, and activity, the learners will be able to do the
following:
 Solve problems involving Systems of Linear Inequalities in Two Variables(M8AL-IIb-2);
 Determine whether a coordinate is a solution of the given inequalities through discussion; and
 Draw the graph of each inequality on the same coordinate by plotting the ordered pairs.

Inequalities in Two Variables
Materials: Graphing papers and pencils

Greetings:
Good Morning!
Welcome To Mathematics 8 Class

Prayer:
Thank you God, that you’re our friend, You delight in all we do, especially when you hear, our
prayers and we give thanks to you. Amen

Attendance:
Hopefully all are present during this presentation.
Classroom Ethics:
When somebody is talking, please listen.
One should listen and jot down the important notes to remember.

Motivation:
Are you aware of the Filipino street terms nowadays the term “TOLITS” “Tol, ano balita?”
“MARITES”, “Mare, ano ang latest?” Many of us are using these terms describing people who are fun of
asking the latest issues in the community and try to spread it to others. Some people are sharing the news to
others without trying to know the veracity of the news.

Activity:
True or False: Tell whether the mathematical statement is True or False.
1. 23 > 5 =____ 4. -77 ≥ - 5 =____
2. -1 < 1 =____ 5. 25 > -95 =____
3. 2 ≤ 1 =____
Answer:
1. TRUE 4. FALSE
2. TRUE 5. TRUE
3. FALSE
Analysis
1. How did you find the activity?
2. Is this activity a review of your past lesson?
3. Which do you think is a number with bigger in value, is it the bigger negative number or a lesser
positive number?
4. How about between a bigger negative number and a lesser negative number?

Abstract
An ordered pair (x,y) is a solution to a system of inequalities if it satisfies all the inequalities in the
system. Graphically, the coordinates of appoint that lie on the graphs of all inequalities in the system is part
of its solution.

STEPS in Graphing a System Of Inequalities In Two Variables:

Example: 5x + y > 3 and y ≤ x – 4

1. Complete the table below to determine the ordered pairs. These ordered pairs shall be plotted in the
same Cartesian plane.
X 0 1 2
Y

2. Substitute the values of “x” in the inequalities. Change the inequality sign into equal sign.

If x = 0 If x = 1 If x = 2
5x + y > 3 5x + y > 3
5x + y > 3
5x + y = 3 5x + y = 3
5x + y = 3
5(1) + y = 3 5(2) + y = 3
5(0) + y = 3
5+y=3 10 + y = 3
0+y=3
y = 3 + (-5) y = 3 + (-10)
Y =3
y = -2 y = -7
So (0, 3)
So (1, -2) So (2, -7)
If x = 0 If x = 1 If x = 2
y≤x–4 y≤x–4 y≤x–4
y=x–4 y=x–4 y=x–4
y = (0) – 4 y = (1) – 4 y = (2) – 4
y = -4 y = -3 y = -2
So (0, -4) So (1, -3) So (2, -2)

3. Draw the graph of each inequality on the same coordinate by plotting the ordered pairs. Connect the
points.
Draw solid line ( -------------- ) if the inequality is ≤, ≥
Draw broken line (- - - - - - - - - -) if the inequality is >, <
4. Test the inequalities with the following ordered pairs.
Point A (5, -2) Point B (2, 3) Point C (1, -4) Point D (2, -3)
5. Shade the appropriate half-plane, which includes the solution set or ordered pairs of the inequalities.

6. Recall that if all points on the same line are included on the line are included in the solution, it is a
closed half-plane, and the line is solid. On the other hand, if the points on the lines are not part of the
solution of the inequality, it is an open half-plane and the line is broken.
7. The region where shaded areas overlap is the graphical solution to the system. If the graphs do not
overlap, then the system has no solution.

Application:
Determine if each ordered pair is a solution of the system of the linear inequality x + y < 5 and 2x – y > 4.
1. (3, -1)
2. (4, -2)
3. (0, 1)

(3, -1) (4, -2) (0, 1)

x= 3; y = -1 x= 4; y = -2 x= 0; y = 1
x+y<5 x+y <5 x+y <5
(3) + (-1)< 5 (4) + (-2)< 5 (0) + (1)< 5
2 < 5, TRUE 2 < 5, TRUE 1 < 5, TRUE

2x – y > 4 2x – y > 4 2x – y > 4

2(3) -(-1) > 4 2(4) -(-2) > 4 2(0) -(1) > 4
6+1>4 8+2>4 -1 > 4, FALSE
7 > 4, TRUE 10 > 4, TRUE

Therefore (3, - Therefore (4, - Therefore (0, 1)

Generalization:
An ordered pair (x,y) is a solution to a system of inequalities if it satisfies all the inequalities in the
system.
To graph a system of inequalities in two variables by graphing.
1. Draw the graph of each inequality on the same coordinate plane. Shade the appropriate half-plane.
Recall the if all points on the same line are included on the line are included in the solution, it is a
closed half-plane, and the line is solid. On the other hand, if the points on the lines are not part of the
solution of the inequality, it is an open half-plane and the line is broken.
2. The region where shaded areas overlap is the graphical solution to the system. If the graphs do not
overlap, then the system has no solution.

Values Integration:
Learn first the issue behind a story and try to understand it before making judgment and
sharing such judgment to the others.

Other Subject Integration:

Chemistry- In mixing chemical, there is a need to determine the exact chemical substance to
mix in the solution otherwise, there will be incompatibility and will result to disorder.
Example: In making soap, Sodium Hydroxide(NaOH) should be mixed with oil because it has the
substance that make the soap hard.
