MODULE 3: MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY

WHAT’S NEW

Activity 3.1

MEDIA OR INFORMATION PROVIDER NUMBER OF HOURS IN A WEEK

Messenger 49 hours
Facebook 35 hours
Tiktok 14 hours
Youtube 14 hours
Twitter 14 hours

How many hours did you spend consuming media today? 8 hours.

Which media provider did you spend most the time? Messenger.

What roles does media play in your life? (leisure, learning, communication, etc.)? For
entertainment, learning, and communication.

Activity 3.2

1. We can identify if a source is reliable if it is well-known for its trustworthiness, and we

can evaluate if the information is current or relevant. Always assess whether the source
provides clear and unbiased information or if it is attempting to persuade you to adopt a
particular point of view. We should also check with respectable sources to see if other
well-known, trustworthy media sites have reported the same story. Check if the story's
data is supported by experts, go beyond the headline, and look for overblown language.

2. The visual or creative presentation of information is referred to as creative techniques in

media. Analyzing the format of a media message entails examining the way it is put
together, as well as the creative components employed in its creation, such as words,
music, color, movement, camera position, and so on. It has an impact on our
comprehension of the information being conveyed. It is critical that we all grasp the
fundamentals of multimedia communication so that we can comprehend the information
presented graphically. Understanding the grammar, syntax, and metaphor system of
media, particularly visual language, not only makes us less vulnerable to manipulation,
but it also improves our comprehension and enjoyment of the media message that is
generated.

3. We all know that different people have varied reactions to the same media message.
Because everyone of us has a distinct combination of life experiences, ideals, and
backgrounds, we all have a part in understanding these media messages. Because of
our disparities in age, gender, education, and culture, the message will be interpreted in
a variety of ways. We can respect and understand other ideas and judge the veracity of
these different perspectives if we recognize this truth.

4. Many principles, values, and notions are "sold" today on the internet, in books, on
television, and in other forms of media. Academic, social, cultural, and political
considerations influence how information is conveyed, presented, and received. All
media content has the power to alter our attitudes on a particular topic. It is our
responsibility to be literate enough to analyze media information and reasonably discern
both evident and hidden imbedded values.

5. Examining the goal of a message reveals how money, ego, or ideology may have
influenced it, and it equips you with the information to analyze and respond to a
message effectively. My answer will be influenced by my consideration of the message's
aim, who profits from or pays for it, and who benefits from it.

Activity 3.3

Because it lacks a well-known or trustworthy author, the post is untrustworthy and includes
misleading information. The content includes false information with the goal to deceive or
mislead the audience. Experts have not backed up the statistics in the information. It also
includes language that is intended to disturb or enrage the audience, and cross-checking with
trustworthy sources reveals that they do not have the same tale.

Activity 3.4

1. This image depicts a man who takes whatever he sees on the internet at face value. He
lacks media and information literacy since he is unable to determine whether the
information he has obtained is accurate. The image could also depict an information
disorder, specifically misinformation, because he believes the information to be true
while it is not.
2. A person who is not media and information literate is likewise depicted in the second
image. He also believes in what he sees on the internet or through social media. He
lacked critical thinking skills and couldn't tell whether the material was correct or
incorrect. Based on the "some guy" he mentioned, it is evident that he did not
investigate whether the information was from a credible source. Furthermore, not all
information on Twitter is accurate because some verified accounts propagate misleading
information.

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED

1. In my own words, I can define media and information literacy as a means for people to
express themselves freely We can react or share our ideas to media, and information
literacy encourages critical thinking, assessing, organizing, and analyzing information
from all forms of media in order to draw conclusions or solve problems. Media and
information literacy have an impact on our daily lives. Everyone may comprehend the
function and usage of media and information with the help of Media and Information
Literacy.
2. Media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy are important lifelong skills
because this can help us be successful in life, particularly in today's environment,
because it strengthens our critical thinking skills and allows us to distinguish between
good and evil. We can accurately exchange information if we have these talents. In such
situations or with such information, our minds can react swiftly. When information is
required, our minds can simply detect it. With the aid of technical instruments, it also
enables us to operate independently, appropriately, and effectively. These abilities are
extremely useful in today's modern society, especially if you aspire to be a professional
one day.
WHAT CAN I DO

1. The message is false information with no credible source to back it up. The only thing I
can do is post on social media platforms that the stories about eating raw eggs and
gargling with salt are untrue, and to prevent the spread of this erroneous information
because it may have bad consequences for those who trusted or believed it.
2. I'll respond to his or her remarks and tell her that I respect his or her point of view on
the subject. We all have different viewpoints, and he/she should respect mine as well.
3. The first thing I'll do is request that anyone who has the video erase it. Because it may
induce depression in the person who is involved in the scandal. I'll also tell them to stop
passing it around. I'll inform the classmate who inquired that I don't have a copy and to
quit begging for it because it's terrible. I'll also tell them not to mock the individual in
the video and not to pass judgment on them. That controversy or video does not define
them as a person, and we should not condemn them solely on the basis of their
blunder.
4. I'll see if the source is trustworthy and if it has an author. I'll also collect information
that's just relevant or related to our research. The year or date should be close to the
present year. I'll also paraphrase and acknowledge the sources of the material that I've
paraphrased.
5. To check the article’s legitimacy, I'll do a cross-check to see if any other trustworthy
sources have the same narrative as the news piece I read on my newsfeed. I'll also see
if the source is trustworthy or if it's a well-known source of accurate information.
