U N I T 1: P E O P L E
The possessive form is used with nouns referring to people, groups of
people, countries, and animals. It shows a relationship of belonging
between one thing and another. To form the possessive, add
apostrophe + s to the noun. If the noun is plural, or already ends in s,
just add an apostrophe after the s.

We add 's to singular nouns to show possession:

The computer of Jane = Jane's computer.
We are having a party at John's house.
Michael drove his friend's car.

We add ' to plural nouns ending in -s:

The room of the boys = the boys' room
The boat of the sailors = the sailors' boat
This is my parents' house.
Those are ladies' shoes.

But we use 's with irregular plural nouns:

Men Women Children People

-These are men's shoes.
-Children's clothes are very expensive.

For names ending in s, you can just add an apostrophe.

-Thomas’ bicycle.
-Elias’ book.
-Lucas’ phone.

: 'Belonging to' or 'ownership' is the most common relationship

the possessive expresses.
-John owns a car. = It is John's car.
-America has some gold reserves. = They are America's gold reserves.

The possessive can also:

Express where someone works, studies or spends time.
-John goes to this school. = This is John's school.
-John sleeps in this room. = This is John's room.

Express a relationship between people.

-John's mother is running late.

-Mrs. Brown's colleague will not be coming to the meeting.

Express intangible things as well.

-John's patience is running out.

-The politician's hypocrisy was deeply shocking.

: There are also some fixed expressions where the possessive form is used.

-a day's work
-a month's pay
-today's newspaper
-in a year's time

-a stone's throw away (= very near)

-at death's door (= very ill)

The possessive is also used to refer to shops, restaurants, churches and colleges, using the
name or job title of the owner.

-Should we go to Luigi's for lunch?

-Is Saint Mary's an all-girls school?

Possessive adjectives are used to show possession or ownership of
something. While we use them when we refer to people, it is more in
the sense of relationship than ownership.

Subject Object Possessive adjective

I Me My
You You Your
He Him His
She Her Her
It It Its
We Us Our
They Them Their

We use possessive adjectives:

To show something belongs to somebody: For relations and friends:

-That's our house. -My mother is a doctor.

-My car is very old. -How old is your sister?

For parts of the body:

We do not include an S to the
-He's broken his arm. adjective when the noun is plural.
-She's washing her hair.
-I need to clean my teeth.
-Our cars are expensive. (Correct)
The possessive adjective its does not have -Ours cars are expensive. (Incorrect)
an apostrophe ('):
-That bird has broken its (NOT it's) wing.
(it's always means it is or it has.)

The verb that is used needs to be in agreement with the noun - if the noun is singular then the verb
is singular; if the noun is plural then the verb is plural.

My pen is black. (Singular)

My pens are black. (Plural)
Our child is intelligent. (Singular)
Our children are intelligent. (Plural)
