LEARNING ACTIVITY WORKSHEET 3

IN ORAL COMMUNICATION

Name_ Date _ Score_ _

OBJECTIVES:
 Identify the types of speech contexts. ( EN11/120c-lfj-17)
LEARNING INPUTS
Communication can involve more than two people, an audience or it can be a group discussion.
It may be classified into different types based on the number of participants in the process.
Types of speech contexts are the following:
Intrapersonal refers to communication that centers in one person where the speaker acts both
as the sender and the receiver of message.
Interpersonal refers to communication between and among people and establishes personal
relationship between and among them.
Public refers to communication that requires you to deliver or send the message before or in
front of a group. The message can be driven by informational or persuasive purposes. The voice
is loud and the gestures are expansive because the audience is big.
Mass Communication refers to communication that takes place through television, radio,
newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, internet, and other types of media.
Organizational Communication refers to the interaction of members along the links in an
organizational structure.
Two variations of Organizational Communication
Formal Organizational Communication uses the proper channels graphically illustrated by an
organizational chart.
Informal Organizational Communication bypasses the links, skips forward, or backwards, or even
goes sideways just to achieve the same goal.
Intercultural Communication is the exchange of concepts, traditions, values, and practices
between and among people of different nationalities and ways of life.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Differentiate the types of speeches and speech styles;
1.2. Analyze the speech style used in various speech contexts;
1.3. Explain the importance of using appropriate speech styles in different speaking
situations.

Learning Inputs:
The context dictates and affects the way people communicate, which results in
various speech styles. Each style dictates what appropriate language or vocabulary should
be used or observed. According to Joos (1968), there are five speech styles. These are (a)
intimate, (b) casual, (c) consultative, (d) formal, and (e) frozen.

Intimate – This style is private, which occurs between or among close family members or
individuals. The language used in this style may not be shared in public.
Casual – This style is common among peers and friends. Jargon, slang, or the vernacular
language are used.
Consultative – This style is the standard one. Professional or mutually acceptable language
is a must in this style. Examples of situations are communication between teachers and
students, employers and employees, doctor and patient, judge and lawyer, or President and
his/her constituents.
Formal – This style is used in formal settings. Unlike the consultative style, this is one-way.
Examples are sermons by priests and ministers, State of the Nation Address of the
President, formal speeches, or pronouncements by judges.
Frozen – This style is “frozen” in time and remains unchanged. It mostly occurs in
ceremonies. Common examples are the Preamble to the Constitution, Lord’s Prayer, and
Allegiance to country or flag.
TYPES OF SPEECHES
INFORMATIVE – An informative speech provides information about a specific subject to an
audience. The aim of an informative speech is to help your audience understand and to
remember the information you are presenting.

ARGUMENTATIVE - An argumentative text presents arguments about both sides of an

issue. It could be that both sides are presented equally balanced, or it could be that one side
is presented more forcefully than the other. It all depends on the speaker, and what side he
supports the most.

PERSUASIVE - Persuasive speaking is the form of communication that people of diverse

backgrounds mostly engage in. This kind of speech can center on any arguably interesting
topic under the sun. When you deliver your persuasive speech, your primary goal is to
influence the thoughts, feelings, actions, and behaviors or attitudes of your listeners (Gamble
& Gamble, 2012). Likewise, you also aim to change their perception and convince them that
your argument is more important, practical, attainable, or feasible. In essence, you—as a
persuasive speaker—advocate for whatever your message is.

ENTERTAINMENT - An entertainment speech aims to share goodwill, joy, and pleasure to

the audience. The purpose of an entertainment speech is not to educate, inform, or inspire
because the primary goal is to make the audience relax, enjoy, and even laugh. This means
that you, the speaker, are expected to be friendly and relaxed, but still courteous during the
speech delivery. Moreover, you should know your audience well in order to entertain them
effectively.
