Regulations of
VOLLEYBALL
THE ROTATION
Team will rotate one position each time they win the serve. Players rotate in a clockwise manner.
The rotational order is determined by the team's starting line-up and controlled with the service order and
players' positions throughout the set.
Rotational Fault
- when the SERVICE is not made according to the rotational order
THE SERVE
Service - act of putting the ball into play
The first service of the first set is determined by toss
The other sets will be started by the team that did not serve first
o Servers must serve from behind the restraining line (end line).
o Ball may be served underhand OR overhand.
o Ball must be clearly visible to opponents before service.
o Served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for a point
o First game serve is determined by a volley, each subsequent game shall be served by the previous
game loser.
o Serve must be returned by a bump only, no setting or attacking a serve.
THE SCORE
Rally Scoring
Rally Scoring is when a team gets a point when the other team fails to return the ball over the net, or
when the ball goes out of bounds, commits an infraction or makes a service error.
Sideout Scoring
When the opposing team fails to return the ball over the net, hit the ball out of bounds, commits
an infraction or make a service error, the serving team scores a point. This also counts for the
receiving team
Game will be played to 25 points.
A team must win by 2 points.
Ways for a team to gain points:
o By successfully grounding the ball on the opponents’ side of the court.
o When the opponent hits the ball more than 3 times before returning the ball over the net.
o When the opponent hits the ball outside of the legal boundary.
o When the opponent touches the ball on the other side before the players’ attack hit.
o When opponent touches the net while playing the ball
BASIC VIOLATIONS
o Stepping on or over the line on a serve
o Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully
o Hitting the ball illegally (carrying, palming, throwing)
o Touching the net with any part of your body while the ball is in play
o Reaching under the net
o Failure to serve in the correct order
o Blocks or spikes from a position in which is clearly not behind the 10-foot line while in the back
row position.
o Reaching over the net, except in these conditions:
o When executing a follow through
o When blocking a ball which is in the opponents’ court but is being returned (Block cannot contact
the ball until AFTER the opponent attempting to return the ball makes contact)
