1.0 INTRODUCTION

A Stenter machine is an electrical machine in the textile industry for stretching or stentering
thin fabrics. For example, the Cotton fabric shrinks width-wise & weft, and the bleaching &
dyeing process distorts the fabric as well. So, a stenter machine is a complete set-up in a
Textile industry that maintains chemical, heating, and mechanical operation on fabric to
ensure the predetermined dimension of the fabric according to the client's demand.

Figure 1: Stenter Machine

A Stenter is a fabric transport device for bringing dimensional stability to the fabric. This
machine grasps fabric at both selvages simultaneously and continuously and carries it from
one point to another. Two endless chains equipped with either clips or pins grasp the selvages
and move in a proper way, carrying the fabric between them. The width between the two
chains can be automatically adjusted by means of motor arrangements. A stenter is the best
method of handling fabrics that require precise width control.

The following activities are carried out in stenter machine:

1. Application of finishing chemicals.
2. Drying and stretching
3. Curing
4. Heat setting
5. Pigment dyeing

2.0 OBJECTIVES

From this study we will be able to learn following objectives

1. To know the different parts of stenter machine

2. To keep the machine running continuously up to the maximum production level.
3. To make sure the best use of utilities.
4. To prevent the undesirable failure of the machine.
5. To improve equipment efficiency.

3.0 FUNCTIONS OF THE STENTER MACHINE

The functions of the stenter machine are given below

1. Heat setting is done by the stenter for lycra fabric, synthetic and blended fabric.
2. Width of the fabric is controlled by the stenter.
3. Finishing chemical can be applied on fabric by the stenter.
4. Loop of the knit fabric is controlled.
5. Moisture of the fabric is controlled by the stenter.
6. Spirality controlled by the stenter.
7. GSM of the fabric is controlled by stenter.
8. Fabric is dried by the stentering process
9. Shrinkage property of the fabric is controlled.
10. Curing treatment for resin, water repellent fabric is done by the stenter.

5.0 FUNCTIONS OF DIFFERENT PARTS OF STENTER MACHINE

Inlet J- Scray:

This part is used to store the fabric during the batch change and Inlet unit contains various
parts like tension device, draw roller, pressure roll and break roll. The important function of
the above rollers is to feed the fabric evenly throughout the machine.

Padding Mangle:

It contains chemical through guide rollers and squeezing mangle. Fabric is dipped into the
finish chemical then sent to squeezing mangle. During this time finish chemicals are applied
on the fabric and squeezes out extra chemicals from the fabric.

Weft Straighter:

It has two bow and free skew rollers which correct the skewness and bowing and make the
weft yarns straight.

Over Feed System:

To give over feed or under feed of the fabric to respective chain track. Inlet chain track: To aid
proper pinning or clipping of the fabric.

Drying Chamber:

To dry the fabric or to fix the finishing chemicals by hot air from the blowers. The blower
sucks hot air from radiator and blow it into the nozzles through which drying occurs. Inside
the drying chamber also contains width adjustment spindle and pin/clip track.

Outlet Chain Track:

To facilitate de-pinning or de clipping of fabric from pins/ clips and to give proper cleaning of
the pins and clips.

5|Page
Batching and Plaiting Unit:

To wind the fabric on a frame or plaiting of finished fabric in a suitable box /trolley.

Width Setting Chamber:

This Chamber controls the width of the fabric by clip of 10 pin.

Heating Chamber:

This chamber controls the shrinkage and the G.S.M of fabric. Temperature range

Fabric Type Temperature Range

Cotton 150°C~170°C
Polyester 165°C~185°C
With Lycra 175°C~190°C

Cooling Chamber:

This chamber cooled the hot fabric before reach to delivery zone.

Exhaust Motor:

This specific part used to exit the steam produced in the chambers and also exit the extra
temperature from the machine.

Delivery Zone:

This zone delivered the fabric in a folded form. In this zone the fabric has to pass through
several rollers in order to prevent the formation of crease mark in the finished fabric.

7.0 CONCLUSION

A Stenter is a specialist oven used in the textile industry for drying and heat treating fabric
after wet processing. It consists of heated chambers, adjustable to the width of the fabric
being treated. In this experiment, we have cultured information about the stenter machine
properly in accordance with the different parts and functions those are associated with this
stenter machine. Stenter machine is crucial for textile finishing sectors. Any kind of finishing
process of the fabric can not be done without using this machine. As a textile engineer it is
our mandate to gain proper knowledge about the parts and functions along with the
maintenance process of the stenter machine. The stenter is a very useful machine in a textile
process house, and the machine plays a vital role in finishing. Moreover, we have fulfilled all of
our objectives of this experiment and this will help us in our future working area and
complete tasks with steneter machine.
