Are Video Games Good or Bad for Children

Most of the children play or want to play video games on a daily basis even though most of
their parents think that video games can have a negative impact on them and give them a limited time
to play or even don’t let them play video games. People may be right about video games having a
negative impact on the younger generation because of the facts that they include so much violence
and they make inappropriate behaviours seem more ordinary for them but have they ever thought
about what can be learned by playing video games and what positive impacts that they might have on
the younger generation?
Video games are becoming a part of maybe not all but most children’s daily lives and
because of this, some people are starting to get worried. I think that the people who are against of
video games being a part of the younger generation’s daily lives are just focusing on the potential
dangers of video games rather than focusing on the potential benefits of them and forget that the
younger generation was born into an age where technology and video games were an actual part of
not only their lives but all the humankind’s lives. Some people think that the younger generation will
stop reading books because of the video games that they play and maybe even stop thinking because
of the technology they have and how it makes almost everything so easy to reach that you can find
the information you want just by typing in some words to the internet. They may be right about some
parts but not the part about the younger generation stop thinking. Most games have to be challenging,
entertaining and complicated to be classified as a good game and to get attention. In most video
games you have to think to pass the levels and finish the game you are playing, also a mother Cheryl
Olson feels the same and says “When my son was a young adolescent, I watched him play The
Legend of Zelda games. He had to search, negotiate, plan, and try different approaches to advance.”
Video games can also be educational in some ways. You have to learn how to make
decisions that will have consequences in the future because some video games are story-based and
your choices matter in those type of games and you have to use strategies to be able to pass the
quests or the levels in games also there are some cooperative games which requires you to work with
other people while playing them and these types of games helps you to develop social skills but you
have to be careful about who you are speaking to because they can be a scammer or some type of
person like that and even this educates you about the types of people you should or should not talk to.
Video games can also benefit your hand-eye coordination because in first-person shooter games you
have to keep track of the position of the character, where the character is heading, their speed, where
the gun is aiming, the movements of the enemy and so much more and you must have a good hand-
eye coordination to do these type of things.

Video games are mostly blamed for the violence that they contain and there are a lot of
researches about how it would affect the children who play them. According to some researches,
children who play video games which include violence are most likely to have aggressive thoughts,
behaviours, feelings and less likely to have emphatical thoughts nevertheless there are some
researches that indicate the opposite view. A study which has been published in Frontiers in
Psychology in 2017 did not find any long-term effects on empathy which have been caused by playing
violent video games. Another study which has been done by the University of York did not find any
signs of violent video games making players more violent as well as with another study which implies
that there is no increase on the level of aggression of players who had played or watched a violent
video game being played.

To conclude, video games are a part of the younger generation’s daily lives because of the
age that they were born in and it cannot be changed. Video games which include violence do not
have long-term effects on people also everyone who thinks that video games are only harmful should
try to see the benefits rather than the negativities.
