5 Keys to Healing from Trauma

These 5 keys are compiled from my 30+ years working with thousands of clients to help
them heal from successfully. ​Trauma of any nature is a very touchy subject and not one
that many therapists speak publicly about.

This guide though brief will succinctly describe some of the things I do and recommend
to help people heal from trauma. Here are 5 keys to guide your healing from trauma:

1. Get support.

Talk about the trauma to at least one person who you feel safe with. The quicker
you begin to process your traumatic experience, the less intense the symptoms
will probably be.

2. Do Yoga, Meditation, Tai Chi or any process that helps you


soothe your nervous system and be more in the moment.

Bessel Van Der Kolk, world-renowned expert on Trauma says that Yoga and
Meditation are extremely important and helpful to help a victim heal from trauma.

3. Get a skilled therapist and better yet a therapist who is certified


in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).

It is a complete approach designed to help people process and heal from trauma
and usually works far more effectively and quickly than simple talk therapy.

As a certified EMDR therapist myself, I am repeatedly overjoyed how effective it


is in helping people who are suffering with PTSD symptoms. It reduces the
symptoms significantly and often gives them a new lease on life.

This is another one of the few approaches that Bessel Van Der Kolk (mentioned
above) endorses for treatment of trauma.

4. Reframe this experience in as positive a way as possible.

Of course it was and is a painful and difficult experience but think about anything
you have learned or gained from this experience.

Here are the most common comments I have heard from clients after
trauma:

a. I have finally learned to open up and let people help me.


b. I have learned that people care about me.
c. I now know I can handle these challenging situations and I feel more of my
emotional strength.
d. I have learned how to forgive myself as well as others.
e. Through my trauma, I have been able to help others that have gone
through similar experiences and have contributed in ways I never thought
possible.

5. Do your best to find your playful self whenever you can.

Dance, sing, have fun with friends, and do other pleasurable activities that
remind you that you are more than your problems. This does not mean to take a
permanent escape from your feelings or issues. What I am saying is to replenish
your soul and energy with life giving, spirit-giving activities.
