Link Power Budget

This document discusses optical link power budgets. It defines power budgets as the amount of loss a link can tolerate while still operating properly. Key points include how power budgets are calculated by accounting for losses from splitters, fiber attenuation, splicing, connectors and other sources. Tools for calculating power budgets are also presented. The purpose is to ensure the received power is above the receiver's sensitivity threshold.

Overview
• One of the first things that should be considered when planning a new
Network or expanding a new one is the distance.
• Distance effects on the optical network behavior by two main parameters:
Dispersion.
Attenuation need to be calculated?

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬

Power Budget Definition
• The Power Budget sometimes named as “Loss Budget”.
• The power budget refers to the amount of fiber optic cable plant
loss that a datalink (transmitter to receiver) can tolerate in order to
operate properly.
• Power Budget has Minimum and Maximum Value.
• Minimum Value: a minimum value of loss so that it does not overload
the receiver.
• Maximum Value: loss to ensure the receiver has sufficient signal to
operate properly.

The purpose of Calculating Power Budget?

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬

The purpose of Calculating Power Budget?
• The loss budget has two main purposes:
• Design stage it is used to ensure the cabling being designed will work with
the links intended to be used over it
• After installation, the loss budget for the cabling is compared to the actual
test results to ensure the cable plant is installed properly.
• Which means : a data link will only operate if the cable plant loss is
within the power budget of the link.

What’s the Decibel (dB)?
• Decibels (dB): is a unit used for power gain or loss.
• The Decibel is used to represent the logarithmic relation of two power levels
(P1 and P2) which measured in watt.
𝑷𝟏
𝒅𝑩 = 𝟏𝟎 𝐥𝐨𝐠 ,
𝑷𝟐

• Decibels-mille-watt(dBm): is used when the power measured relative to a

certain level in mille-watt (i.e.; P2=1mw).
• dBm mainly used for output power and receiver Sensitivity.

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬

Power Budget Calculation

• The power budget is the difference between the output

power of the transmitter and the input power requirements of
the receiver.

Note: cable plant loss is only a part of the power budget

Example 1

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬

Example 2

• Attenuation coefficient=4.5dB/km
• Connector Loss=0.5 dB
• Margin=2dB

• IS this system Good?

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬
Answer
• Total Losses=0.5*4.5+0.5*2=3.25dB
• Prec=Ptx-total loss-Margin
• Prec=-15-3.25-2=-20.25dB
• Prec>Psens  system will work

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬

Practice Example

• Attenuation coefficient=0.25dB/km
• Splice loss=0.1 dB
• Number of splices=46
• Connector Loss=0.2 dB
• Margin=6dB

• IS this system Good?

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬
Answer
• Total Losses=0.25*185+0.1*46+0.2*2=51.3dB
• Prec=Ptx-total loss-Margin
• Prec=0-51.3-6=-57.3dB
• Prec<Psens  system will not work!!!!!

• How To solve??????

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬

How to solve?

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬

Step 1: Amplifier Gain
• 𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛 ≥ 𝑝𝑠𝑒𝑛 − 𝑃𝑅𝑥
• 𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛 ≥ −28 − −57.3
• 𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛 ≥ 29.3𝑑𝐵
• 𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛 ≥ 30𝑑𝐵

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬

Step2: Where to put Amplifier?

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬

Where is -30dBm point?
• 30 = 𝛼 ∗ 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑎𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡.
• Point length=30/0.25=120Km,
• But at 120 km from the transmitter No of splice=120/4=30
• Splice loss=0.1*30=3dB

National Telecommunication Institute ‫المعهد القومي لالتصاالت‬

Amplifier Location

• Also there is one connector at TX and two connectors for the amplifier

• Actual loss at 120Km= 30+3+0.6=33.6dB  which is greater than 30dB

• Decrease Amplifier position by 3.6/0.25=14.4km

•  120-14.4=105.6km

Power Budget parameters
• Transmitter: launch power, temperature and aging
• Fiber connections: splitter, connectors and splices
• Cable: fiber loss and temperature effects
• Receiver: detector sensitivity
• Others: safety margin and repairs

GPON Loss budget
Component Typical Loss
WDM 1dB
Splitter (1x32) 17 dB
Splice 0.2dB
APC connector 0.4dB
Fiber length 18.2km
1310nm 0.35dB/km 6.4dB
1490nm 0.27dB/km 4.9dB
1550nm 0.2dB/km 3.6dB

Total loss Budget if launch power of the transmitter at 1310 nm

1310nm 25 is –4 dBm with a detector sensitivity of –28 dBm, the allowed loss
1490nm 23.5 budget of 24 dB will compromise the system’s
performance at 1310 nm (upstream).
1550nm 22.3
Will this system work?????
