Mental health
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is defined as a
state of well-being in which every individual, can cope with the normal stresses of
life, realizes his or her own potential and can work productively. Mental Health
includes one’s psychological, emotional and social well-being. It also affects how
we think, feel and act. Mental health can ultimately affect one’s daily life activities,
relationships and physical health. While it can be expensive to pay for a therapist
and we live in a rhythm of life that does not allow going to therapy sessions, mental
health allows us to develop, improves sleep problems, helps with anger problems,
and raise our self-esteem.
a) Mental health must be more recognized. Normalizing the conversation about
mental health empowers people to talk and get the help they need. By not talking
about mental health, we add to the stigma that surrounds it . Some of the harmful
effects of stigma can include: Discrimination, Lack of understanding by family,
friends, co-workers or others, Fewer opportunities for work, school or social
activities or trouble finding housing and receiving Bullying, physical violence or
harassment. Mental illnesses are common and widespread and can affect anyone,
it is estimated that nearly 1 billion people live with a mental disorder.
b) It is as important as physical health. it is often thought that our mind and body
are separated, when in reality our mental health and physical health are
interconnected. Research shows that people with a mental health problem are
more likely to have a preventable physical health condition such as heart disease.
For example, depression increases the risk for many types of physical health
problems, particularly long-lasting conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and
stroke. Similarly, the presence of chronic conditions can increase the risk for
mental illness.
c) It improves sleep problems, helps us with anger problems, and helps us raise
our self-esteem. When we are mentally healthy, we enjoy our life and environment,
and the people in it; we can be creative, learn, try new things, and take risks. We
are better able to cope with difficult times in our personal and professional lives.
We feel the sadness and anger that can come with the death of a loved one, a job
loss or relationship problems and other difficult events, but in time, we are able to
get on with and enjoy our lives once again. In cases of people with chronic
diseases nurturing their mental health can also help combat or prevent the mental
health problems associated with a chronic physical illness. Learning to cope with
stress well, for instance, can have a positive impact on heart diseases.
Mental health has been overlooked for many years however, it is high time we
started taking it seriously given that the consequences of not doing it are bad. We
must be informed about mental health because it can easily happen to someone
close to us. Awareness reduces negative adjectives that have been set to describe
our people with a metal illness and by raising awareness, mental health can now
be seen as an illness. These illnesses can be managed by treatment, we should
not isolate mental illness from the physical health conditions, such as diabetes,
blood pressure, or cancer and other problems that mental illnesses may provoke.
Many people do not have the resources to access treatment such as therapy for
their mental health problems; however, it has been proved that by taking care of
our mental health we can achieve a better lifestyle therefore the importance of
doing so.
