TUTORIAL 7:
ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION

MARCH 2015

a) A copper wire coil has radius of 25.5 cm. The coil is placed with its plane perpendicular to the
direction of a uniform magnetic field of 2.71 T. There is a temperature fluctuation that causes
the coil to expand until the radius become 25.7 cm in 55.3 ms. Calculate the induced emf in the
coil.
(Ans: -0.158 V)

b) A closely wound solenoid has self-inductance, L = 250 mH and resistance of 1.30 Ω. It is

connected to a DC power supply of 6.14 V. When the switch is closed, the current takes some
time to reach saturation.
i) Sketch the graph of current against time representing this event.
ii) Calculate the maximum energy stored in the solenoid.
(Ans: i) Isat = 4.72 A, ii) 2.78 J)

SEPTEMBER 2014

A coil of wire consists of 20 turns of area 1.5 x 10 -3 m2. A magnetic field B is perpendicular to the
surface of the loop. At t = 0 s, the magnitude of the field is 0.05 T. at a later time t = 0.1 s, the
magnitude of the field has increased to 0.06 T. Find the induced emf in the coil during this time.
(Ans: -3.00 x 10-3 V)

MARCH 2014

PART A:

i) State Lenz’s Law.

ii) The energy stored in an inductor is 30 mJ when the current in it is 50 mA. Calculate the self
inductance, L of the coil.

iii) A rectangular coil of size 10 cm x 15 cm has 100 turns. It is placed inside a uniform magnetic field
of flux density 20 mT. Initially, the plane of the coil is perpendicular to the field. If the coil is
rotated through 90 ͦ in time interval 0.10 s, find the induced e.m.f in the coil.

iv) A rectangular coil of 200 turns has size 10 cm x 15 cm. It rotates at a constant angular velocity of
600 rpm in a uniform magnetic field of strength 200 mT. Determine the maximum voltage
produced by the coil.

v) A solenoid of length 50 cm and a diameter 5.0 cm has 1000 turns. The solenoid can be assumed
to behave as an ideal inductor. Determine the inductance produced by the current.

(Ans: ii) 24 H, iii) 0.30 V, iv) 37.70 V, v)4.93 x 10 -3 H)

ii) The energy stored in an inductor produced by the current.
(Ans: i) 5.92 x 10-3 H, ii) 0.0185 J)

plane is perpendicular to the magnetic field lines. If the area of the loop suddenly changes to zero
in 0.50 s, determine the induced emf in the loop.
