Professor of Cello
The Royal College of Music in Stockholm (KMH)

is Sweden's only independent State College for higher music education. KMH educates more than 900 students annually in
education programmes including, among other fields, folk music, jazz, classical music, conducting, composition, music and
media production as well as various teacher education programmes with a major in music. KMH also conducts research and
educates researchers in music and music education, and participates in extensive artistic and educational research and
development projects in Sweden and internationally.

The Royal College of Music in Stockholm (KMH) hereby announces a vacant position as Professor if Cello.

within the Academy of Classical Music, Composition, Conducting and Music Theory. The employment is mainly situated at
the Edsberg Manor in Sollentuna. This is a permanent position and comprises 40% of full time.

Description of the subject area


The Cello subject area includes the instrumental command of the cello, as related to technique and performance. The Cello
repertoire studies area includes the Western Art Music field, from the Baroque to the Contemporary repertoire for the
instrument.

Work tasks

Teaching students in cello, in both English and Swedish. Leading/teaching masterclasses for the student group.
Bearing the responsibility for, and actively contributing to artistic and educational development within the subject area.
Active participation in the internal work of KMH and the Department, including departmental meetings, and
developmental work and projects.
Actively participating in work concerning entrance examinations and examination work.
Being a supporting party in external collaboration and in relevant research projects.
Collaborating within KMH and the surrounding community, and providing information about education and research
within your personal field.
To perform assignments of an administrative nature and perform management assignments on a departmental level
and other levels within KMH, may occur.

Qualification requirements
A person who has demonstrated both artistic and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor in
disciplines within the fine, applied or performing arts (Chapter 4, Section 3 of the Higher Education Ordinance (HF)).

In order to be able to perform the work tasks for this position, it is required that the applicant has:

Very advanced artistic expertise within the Cello subject area, through extensive and documented personal activity as
a cellist at a high international level.
Documented ability and experience in teaching advanced students at the highest level. This teaching expertise must
have been demonstrated through verified qualifications within higher education and teaching.

Ability to be able to teach in both Swedish (or another Nordic language) and English is a requirement. A person who does
not satisfy the requirements set for language skills at the time of employment must acquire them within two years.

Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor shall be the general degree of the expertise required as a
qualification for employment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment
of research or artistic expertise (Chapter 4, Section 3 of the Higher Education Ordinance). In addition, the following
assessment criteria shall apply:

The degree of artistic expertise, demonstrated through documented artistic performance at high national and
international levels.
The degree of teaching expertise, through having developed, led and implemented high-quality education at basic and
advanced levels.
The degree of ability to collaborate with the surrounding community.
The degree of ability to act as an academic leader and also the personal ability generally required to be able to
successfully fulfil the work tasks.
The degree of administrative and other expertise that is of importance for the work.

We place great importance on the assessment of the applicant’s teaching expertise within a broad repertoire area, ability to
disseminate commitment to and interest in the subject, ability to structure and organise the curriculum content in academic
terms, and ability to engage and inspire students to their own reflection and personal learning. We also value the applicant’s
interest in research/artistic development work.
Moreover, great importance is placed on personal qualities, such as the ability to take initiative and collaborate within their
own subject area group, within other higher education institutions and also, externally, in relation to the surrounding
community.

In this recruitment, KMH will primarily take into consideration the person who, following a qualitative, overall assessment of
competence and expertise, is assessed to have the best prerequisites to implement and develop the work tasks in question
and contribute to the positive development of our college.

Consideration of social and gender equality


KMH strives to, in conjunction with teacher-recruitment, be a place of employment that attracts, recruits, retains and
develops teachers on the staff, regardless of gender, transgender identity or expression, ethnicity, disability, religious beliefs,
sexual orientation or age. Regarding gender equality, equality between women and men shall always be taken into account
and promoted in the operations of higher education institutions (Chapter 1, Section 5 of the Higher Education Act (HL)). As
indicated by Chapter 3, Section 7 of the Discrimination Act, employers must take active measures to, among other things,
achieve an equal gender distribution. This means that when there is, in essence, no prevailing equal distribution between
women and men in a certain type of work or within a certain employee category, KMH will, in conjunction with filling new
positions, make a special effort to recruit applicants of the underrepresented gender. KMH will attempt to ensure that the
proportion of employees of the underrepresented gender subsequently increases. At KMH, ‘Equal gender distribution’
means at least 40 percent of the underrepresented gender, i.e. within a certain employee category at KMH. As regards to
this position, women within the category ‘Professor’ are underrepresented in the unit in question.
