Vocational Scenario / Context:
Northern Power Women is a quickly growing company that offers amazing opportunities to men and women working in the
industry, trying to promote and encourage gender equality and inclusiveness. They specialise in giving motivational speeches to
companies who try to improve their level of gender equality and inclusiveness. Recently they have launched a 12-week mentoring
programme that will be aimed at guiding company workers towards a more equal future. Our college has been approached to create
a working prototype of a new app that will assist the mentoring programme by automating the process!

The aim of the app is to take information about both mentors and mentees and find an algorithm that will match the appropriate
mentor to their compatible mentee. You will be using the development cycle of mobile apps to complete this working prototype
throughout its various stages:

- Research: You will be reviewing existing apps that cover the same/similar and taking note of what makes them so
successful.
- Design: You will start to put your ideas together to prepare a solution that addresses all the needs of your client’s
requirements as well as the needs of your target audience.
- Create: You will then move on to create your designed app, using both pre-defined code and original code that you will
write yourself too, try to link together your assets and create a working prototype.
- Test: Now that your prototype app has been created, you must test that everything works and that your app is suitable for
the user/client.
- Review: This is where you will review all the stages of development and reflect on what you could have done better and
how suitable your final product is.

Task 1: This task targets the following criteria: P1, M1, D1

The liaison from Northern Power Women would like you to conduct some information about the features that could be included in a
mobile app and the different purposes a mobile app could have.

You have been asked you to review two different kinds of mobile app and to discuss the strengths and
weaknesses of each. You will prepare a short presentation on this subject.

The two apps to be reviewed should be designed for different purposes, for example:

· to give information (e.g. BBC, photo, video, music)

· for navigation (e.g. location identification, nearest London Underground stations, nearest sandwich shop)
· for entertainment (e.g. YouTube, Spotify)
· for leisure and fitness (e.g., tracking fitness, Run Keeper)
· for communication (e.g., Skype mobile, Live Messenger, Face Time)
· for augmented reality (e.g. Layar, Junaio ).

Create the presentation using PowerPoint® slides and notes. Make sure the presentation includes the
following:

· a description of the features of both mobile apps and how these features affect the intended use
· a description of the intended use or purpose of both mobile apps
· a review of how the features of both mobile apps affect the intended use, usability and appeal to the target audience

You should also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of both of the mobile apps.

Checklist of evidence required:

PowerPoint presentation of features and intended use of two given apps
PowerPoint slide reviewing effects of the app on intended use, usability and appeal to the audience
PowerPoint slide evaluating strengths and weaknesses of at least one app
Task 2: This task Targets the following criteria: P2, P3, M2, D2
Northern Power Women would like you to create a prototype for an app that allows them to match up mentors to their mentees
after signing up to their 12-week programme. Think about what information you would need in order to do this.

You should start by describing the user requirements and Intended purpose of your app and include this information in your
designs. Once established you should design your proposed solution. The design document(s) should include:

● A detailed proposed solution, using a range of suitable tools (in addition to those used at pass) such as flowcharts, control
structures pseudocode, events, data handling, and error handling and reporting)

● A description of the main tasks (data input/output, screen layouts and navigation)

● A list of any pre-defined programs/code snippets (including any functions or

sub-routines) and assets, documenting the sources appropriately.

● Description of the method of solution

● Fully referenced source table, documenting the sources appropriately

● A test plan (to test for the logic and functionality).

You will produce design ideas for apps. Please note that you do not have to create original assets unless you choose to do so.

In addition to your initial designs, learners should produce:

● A brief outline of any alternative solutions for the intended software program

● Design justification that describes how your chosen design fulfils the purpose and user requirements

●A Review of the design in light of any constraints, such as variable screen sizes.

At this level, you are expected to be able to justify your design decisions and how the chosen design fulfils the purpose and user
requirements. You should consider the suitability for end users and the quality and thoroughness of your design work. You also
need to review your design in light of any constraints (e.g. screen size) arising from the device and the programming language
used. You should also explain why alternative designs were rejected.

Checklist of evidence required:

Description of user requirements and intended purpose of your designed app
App design document including:
- Block-out designs of app layout and main program tasks
- List of any pre-defined code and assets (with sources referenced appropriately)
- Empty test plan
Further detail included in your app design document including:
- Advanced designs (flowcharts, pseudocode, events, troubleshooting)
- Alternative solutions
- Test plan with data
Detailed report of proposed solution, including:
- Detailed justification of design ideas (including how they meet the requirements and intended purpose)
- Issues/development points in your proposed solution
- Justification for why alternative ideas were not used

FOR 2012 L1/2 FIRSTS ONLY:

If you have not achieved the Level 2 criteria, your work will be assessed to determine if the following Level 1 criteria have
been met.
Criterion
