Persuasive Paragraph: "Should Advertising Be Allowed in Schools?"
Directions: Use the following graphic organizer to help you develop an effective and logical persuasive
paragraph. Make sure that you remember to add a topic sentence at the beginning of the paragraph to
introduce the topic, transition words between ideas (i.e. also, in addition, most importantly, furthermore, first,
second, finally), and a concluding sentence at the end to summarize the paragraph.
Claim #1: One reason is that homework gives students additional practice of
skills covered in class.
Evidence/ Example #1: High school classes are too short to teach a new
concept and practice it sufficiently for students to master. Students need both
guided practice in class and independent practice at home.
Claim #2: Another reason teachers should be allowed to give homework is that
students do not all work at the same speed and giving students time at home to
finish work keeps them falling behind.
Evidence/Example #3: For example, the ideal essay writing process needs a lot
of time for students to think about their ideas, as well as a lot of time to write,
revise and proof read their writing. If homework was not allowed, students would
be constantly rushing through longer assignments or teachers would have to
assign only short, unoriginal tasks.
