Business Math - Ratio and Proportion

The document discusses the topic of ratio and proportion. It aims to help learners compare and differentiate between ratio and rate, write proportions to illustrate real-life situations, identify different types of proportions with examples, and solve problems involving direct, inverse, and partitive proportions. The topic contains readings on ratio and rate, proportion, and the different types of proportions. It provides example problems for learners to practice applying ratios and proportions to solve real-world problems.

TOPIC 3: RATIO AND PROPORTION

After completing the topic, the learner is expected to:

• Compare and differentiate ratio and rate (ABM_BM11RP-1E-1).

• Write proportions illustrating real-life situations (ABM_BM11RP-1e-2).
• Identify the different kinds of proportion and give examples for each (ABM_BM11RP-1e-3).
• Solve problems involving direct, inverse, and partitive proportion (ABM_BM11RP-1f-4).

ABOUT THE TOPIC:

The real-life application of ratio and proportion does not count. At all times, this concept is used
for decision-making and estimating what matters. Even in measuring, counting, determining
length of time, etc., we can really use this concept.

In this topic, you will be able to define proportion, determine if the given equation shows a
proportion, solve for the value of the unknown in a proportion, and apply proportions in real-life
problems.

DISCUSSION

READING 1: Ratio and Rate

Ratio- is used to compare relative values of numbers or quantities. All ratios must be expressed
in simplest form. Ratio can also be written as fraction, decimal, or percent.

In business, ratio can be used to show the part of investment shares.

Consider the following problem:

➢ To run a coffee shop, three businessmen, Ace, Brian, and Carlo decided to invest
₱ 1,800,000. If the whole investment for the business has ten parts, how much is

1. Ace’s investment if his share is five of the ten parts?

2. Brian’s investment if his share is two of the ten parts?
3. Carlo’s investment if her share is three of the ten parts?

In the problem, each investment part is worth ₱ 1,800,000 ÷ 10 = ₱ 180,000. The following
tables show the summary of the shares of investments:
The same problem can be solved by treating the amount of investments as a fraction of a whole.

To compare the investments by each business partner, it is more convenient to use ratio. Notice
that all investments are expressed in peso. Thus, the investment shares can now be expressed
in ratio 900,000:360,000:540,000 or 5:2:3.

ASSESSMENT

Solve each of the following problems.

1. Three pieces of black ballpen costs 32 pesos. How much do ten pieces of black ballpen
cost?
2. The ratio of pen to paper is 4:8. If there are 40 sheets of paper, how many pens are there?
3. Anna can type 140 words in three minutes. How many words can she type in ten minutes?
4. If five men can finish a fencing project in 12 days, in how many days can six men do the
same job at the same rate?
5. Three men can finish doing the interior designing of the house in 3 weeks. How many
more men are needed to finish the interior designing which needs to be completed in a
week?
6. If there are 90 participants in a seminar, and the ratio of women to men is 2:3, how many
women attended the seminar?
7. A car consumes 1 liter of gasoline to travel 12 km, how many liters of gasoline will it
consume on a 105.6-km trip?
8. A small bird can fly 320 km in one day if it flies continuously. At this rate, how many days
will it take the bird to fly 1,344 km?
9. If 3,600 basketball shorts are distributed to four sports houses in the ratio of 1:2:3:4, how
many shorts does the sports house with the largest share receive?
10. Mr. Perez allocates his monthly salary for bills, food, transportation, and other expenses
at the ratio of 3:3:2:2. If he received ₱28,450 last month, how much did he spend on food?
