1.0 Earthquake Load Combination: Strength Design

1. This document provides an example of calculating strength design moments and forces for a moment resisting frame under earthquake loading according to NSCP 2015 standards. 2. It calculates the strength design moment at beam end A as 458.15 kN-m or 110.55 kN-m by combining dead, live, and seismic loads according to the specified load combinations. 3. It also calculates the strength design axial load at column top C as 1220.5 kN or -288.0 kN and the moment as 343.5 kN-m or -208.4 kN-m by applying the same load combinations to the column forces and moments.

0 Earthquake Load Combination: Strength Design

Ex. 1. The example demonstrates the application of the strength design and combinations that
involve the seismic load E given in NSCP 2015, Section 208.5.1.1. This will be done for the
moment resisting frame shown below.

A B C

D
Given:
Zone 4
Cv = 0.40 Ca =0.40
I = 1.5
𝜌 = 1.1
f1 = 0.5

Beam A-B and Column C-D are elements of the special moment-resisting frame. Structure
analysis has provided the following individual beam moments at A, and the column axial loads
and moments at C due to dead load, classroom building live load and lateral and seismic forces.

Dead Load D Live Load L Lateral Seismic Load E

Beam Moment at A 135 kN-m 65 kN-m 165 kN-m
Column C-D Axial Load 400 kN 185kN 480 kN
Column Moment at C 56 kN-m 35kN-m 220 kN-m

Find the following:

1. Strength design moment at beam end A.
2. Strength design axial and moment at column top C.
Calculations:

1. Strength design moment at beam end A.

To determine the strength design moments for design, the earthquake component E must be
combined with the dead and live load components D and L. This process is illustrated below:

a. Determine earthquake load E;

E = 𝜌Eh + Ev
Ev = 0.5 Cv I D
Ev = 0.5(0.40)(1.5)(135)
Ev = 40.5 kN-m

Eh = 165 kN-m

E = 1.1(165) + 40.5
E = 222.0 kN-m

b. Apply earthquake load Combinations

1.2 D + 1.0 E + f1L NSCP 2015 Equation 203-5

0.9 D ± 1.0 E + 1.6H NSCP 2015 Equation 203-7

Using 2015 Equation 203-5 and 203-7, the strength design moments at A for
combination Dead, Live, and seismic forces are determined:

MA = 1.2 MD +1.0 ME + f1L

= 1.2 (135) + 1.0 (222.0) + 0.5 (65)
= 416.5 kN-m

MA = 0.9 MD ± 1.0 ME + 1.6H

= 0.9 (135) + 1.0 (222.0)
=343.5 kN-m
= 0.9 (135) -1.0 (222.0)
= -100.5kN-m
Therefore, MA = 416.5 kN-m or -100.5 kN-m

c. Specific material requirements:

1.32 D ± 1.1 E + 1.1f1L NSCP 2015 Equation 409-4*
0.9 D ± 1.0 E + 1.6H NSCP 2015 Equation 203-7

MA = 1.1 MA
= 1.1(416.5)
= 458.15 kN-m
MA = 1.1(100.5)
=110.55 kN-m
Therefore, MA = 458.15 kN-m for concrete frame.

2. Strength design axial load and moment at column top C:

a. Determine Earthquake load E:

E = 𝜌Eh + Ev
Ev = 0.5 Ca I D
Ev = 0.5(0.4)(1.5)(400)
Ev = 120.0 kN-m

For axial Load:

Eh = 480 kN-m

E = 1.1(480) + 120
E = 648.0 kN-m

For moment:
Ev = 0.5 Ca I D
Ev = 0.5(0.4)(1.5)(56)
Ev = 16.8 kN-m

E = 1.1(220) + 16.8
= 258.8 kN-m

d. Apply earthquake load Combinations

1.2 D + 1.0 E + f1L NSCP 2015 Equation 203-5

0.9 D ± 1.0 E + 1.6H NSCP 2015 Equation 203-7

Using 2015 Equation 203-5 and 203-7, the strength design axial force at C for
combination Dead, Live, and seismic forces are determined:

PC = 1.2 D +1.0 E + f1L

= 1.2 (400) + 1.0 (648) + 0.5 (185)
= 1220.5 kN

Pc = 0.9 D ± 1.0 E + 1.6H

= 0.9 (400) + 1.0 (648)
= 1008 kN
= 0.9 (400) -1.0 (648)
= -288 kN
Therefore, PC = 1220.5 kN or -288.0 kN

For moment:

Mc = 1.2 MD +1.0 ME + f1L

= 1.2 (56) + 1.0 (258.8) + 0.5 (35)
= 343.5 kN-m

MC = 0.9 MD ± 1.0 ME + 1.6H

= 0.9 (56) + 1.0 (258.8)
= 309.3 kN-m
= 0.9 (56) -1.0 (258.8)
= -208.4 kN-m
Therefore, MC = 343.5 kN-m or -208.4 kN-m

e. Specific material requirements:

Reinforced concrete: The axial force Pc and the Mc must be multiplied by 1.1 as per
NSCP 2015 203.3.1.
