For predicting the behavior of a three phase induction motor, study of the equivalent
circuit of the motor is necessary. The approximate equivalent circuit of the induction
motor is shown in the figure.
The data necessary to determine the approximate equivalent circuit parameters are
obtained from the no-load and blocked-rotor tests along with the stator resistance
measurement. The method makes use of several approximations, but the results obtained
are fairly accurate.

PROCEDURE
A) No Load Test
1) Make connection as shown in figure.
2) Start the motor at no load with low supply voltage. Increase the voltage gradually
up to rated voltage.
3) Measure voltage (V nl ), current (I nl ) and power (W pnl ) in every step. These are the
single phase quantity.
4) Stop the motor and keep the variac in zero position.
Slip: The difference between the synchronous speed N s of the rotating stator field
and the actual rotor speed N as called slip (s).

CALCULATION:
6) R C = V nl / ( Inl cosϕ 0 )
7) X M = V nl / ( Inl sinϕ0 )
1) R dc = V dc / Idc .
2) R 1 = 1.6x R dc .
