Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Energy Conversion Laboratory Course Code: EEE206 Experiment No. 2

The document describes an experiment to determine the equivalent circuit parameters of a 3-phase induction motor. Key steps include: 1) Performing a no-load test to measure voltages, currents, and power to calculate the core loss, no-load power factor, and magnetizing reactance. 2) Performing a blocked-rotor test to measure voltages, currents, and power to calculate the short-circuit loss and resistances. 3) Measuring the stator resistance directly. The results are used to construct the equivalent circuit model of the motor and understand its behavior.

NAME OF THE EXPT.: STUDY OF A 3-PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR

Determination of Equivalent circuit parameter of three phase Induction motor

For predicting the behavior of a three phase induction motor, study of the equivalent
circuit of the motor is necessary. The approximate equivalent circuit of the induction
motor is shown in the figure.

The data necessary to determine the approximate equivalent circuit parameters are
obtained from the no-load and blocked-rotor tests along with the stator resistance
measurement. The method makes use of several approximations, but the results obtained
are fairly accurate.

PROCEDURE

A) No Load Test
1) Make connection as shown in figure.
2) Start the motor at no load with low supply voltage. Increase the voltage gradually
up to rated voltage.
3) Measure voltage (V nl ), current (I nl ) and power (W pnl ) in every step. These are the
single phase quantity.
4) Stop the motor and keep the variac in zero position.

B) Blocked Rotor Test

1) Block the rotor tightly with the base.
2) Start the motor with very low voltage. Increase the voltage very slowly and
observe the ammeter reading carefully until rated current flows through the motor.
3) Measure voltage (V sc ), current (I sc ) and power (W psc ). These are the single phase
quantity.
4) Stop the machine.

C) Stator Resistance Measurement:

1) Disconnect the motor from AC supply.
2) Apply a DC supply to any one of the stator coils.
3) Measure DC voltage(V dc ) and DC current(I dc )

CALCULATION:

A) From No load Test:

1) No load phase loss = W pnl .

2) Neglecting the friction loss Core loss, W core = W pnl
3) No-load power factor ,
cosϕ 0 = W core /( V nl I nl )
5) sinϕ 0 = 1- cos ϕ 0
2

6) R C = V nl / ( Inl cosϕ 0 )
7) X M = V nl / ( Inl sinϕ0 )

B) For Short Circuit Test:

1) Short circuit loss per phase = W psc .

2) Z sc = V sc / I sc
3) R 01 = W psc / Isc 2
4) R 2 = R 01 – R 1
5) X 01 = Z sc 2 – R 01 2
6) X 1 =X 2 = X 01 /2

C) Resistance Measurement Test:

1) R dc = V dc / Idc .
2) R 1 = 1.6x R dc .

REPORT:

1) Draw the equivalent circuit with the appropriate values.

2) Why the equivalent circuit of an induction motor is necessary?
