CHAPTER 1
REPRODUCTION IN ORGANISMS
1. Name an organism where cell division is itself a mode of
reproduction.
Bacteria/ amoeba
2. Name the phenomenon where the female gamete directly
develops into a new organism with an avian example.
Parthenogenesis is the phenomenon where the female
gamete directly develops into a new organism. Ex. turkey
3. What is parthenogenesis? Give two examples from animals.
Development of an egg into a complete individual without
fertilization is known as parthenogenesis. Ex. Honey bee,
aphis, gall fly.
4. Which type of reproduction is effective sexual or asexual and
why?
Sexual reproduction is effective. In sexual reproduction a
male and a female gamete fused to form a diploid zygote.
Hence young ones will show many genetic variations and
such variations lead to evolution.
5. Why are the offspring of oviparous animal at a greater risk as
compared to offspring of viviparous organisms?
The eggs of the oviparous animals are laid outside the body
of the female. So, the eggs are not getting prenatal protection
and nourishment by the mother. Hence, they are at greater
risk as compared to viviparous organisms.
6. Give reasons for the following:
(a) Some organisms like honey bees are called
parthenogenetic animals.
(b) A male honey bee has 16 chromosomes where as its
female has 32 chromosomes.
a. In honey bees unfertilized eggs develop into males or
drones. So, they are called parthenogenic animals.
b. As male honey bees are developed from unfertilized eggs
or haploid cells, they have 16 chromosomes. On the other
hand, females develop from fertilized or diploid cells they
have 32 chromosomes.
7. How is juvenile phase different from reproductive phase?
Juvenile phase/ vegetative phase is the period of growth
between the birth of the individual up to reproductive
maturity.

CHAPTER 2
HUMAN REPRODUCTION
1. Mention the differences between spermiogenesis and spermatogenesis.
Spermiogenesis is the process of transforming the spermatids into
mature spermatozoa (sperms).
Spermatogenesis is the sequence of events in the seminiferous tubules
of the testes that produce the male gametes, the sperms.
2. At what stage of development are the gametes formed in new born male
and female?
In males the spermatogonia or sperm mother cells formed during
embryonic stage (gastrula) begin to undergo mitotic division at puberty
and continue throughout life.
In females, during foetal development, millions of egg mother cells or
oogonia are produced. The oogonia formation is stopped after the birth.
Then oogonial cells are converted into primary oocytes. The primary
oocytes develop into primordial or primary follicles.
At the time of puberty ovum or the female gamete will be released from
these follicles after undergoing many physiological changes.
3. Expand the acronyms:
a. FSH b. LH c. hCG d. hPL
a. FSH:
In males, FSH stimulates testicular growth and enhances the production
of Androgen Binding Protein (ABP) by the Sertoli cells and helps in the
process of spermiogenesis.
In females, FSH stimulates follicular development and secretion of
oestrogen by the follicle cells.
b. LH:
It acts on the Leydig cells and stimulates the synthesis of testosterone
which in turn stimulates the process of spermatogenesis.
c. hCG: (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin)
It is essential for normal pregnancy.
d. hPL:
Increased level of oestrogens, progesterone and human Placental
Lactogen (hPL) towards the end of pregnancy stimulate the
hypothalamus towards prolactin – releasing factors. The anterior
pituitary responds by secreting prolactin which plays a major role in
lactogenesis.
4. How is polyspermy avoided in humans?
Once fertilization is accomplished, cortical granules from the
cytoplasm of the ovum forms a barrier called the Fertilization
membrane around the ovum preventing further penetration of

A surgical correction at a young age can rectify the defect, or else, these
individuals may become sterile and are unable to produce viable sperms.
24. What are Cowper’s glands?
It is one of the accessory glands of the male reproductive system. It is
also called bulbourethral gland, present below the prostate gland. Its
secretion lubricates penis.
25. What is urethral meatus?
Urethra originates from the urinary bladder extends through the penis by
an external opening called urethral meatus.
26. What is vesiculase?
Vesiculase is a coagulating enzyme present in seminal plasma. It
enhances sperm motility.
27. Write a short note on mesovarium.
Mesovarium is the ovarian ligament. It attaches ovary to the pelvic wall
and the uterus.
28. What do you mean by fimbriae and ampulla?
Fimbriae are the finger like processes that arise from the edge of the
infundibulum of the fallopian duct. They help in collecting the ovum after
ovulation.
The infundibulum continues into a wider central portion called ampulla.
29. What do you mean by fundus?
Fundus is the rounded region superior to uterus.
30. Say about perimetrium, myometrium and endometrium.
The wall of the uterus has three layers of tissues.
The outermost thin membranous serous layer is called the perimetrium.
It protects the uterus from friction.
The middle thick muscular layer is called myometrium.
It exhibits strong contractions during parturition.
The inner glandular layer is called endometrium.
It undergoes cyclic changes during the menstrual cycle.
31. Differentiate between Bartholin’s gland and Skene’s gland.
The Bartholin’s glands (also called greater vestibular glands) are located
posterior to the left and right of the opening of the vagina.
They secrete mucus to lubricate the vagina and are homologous to the
bulbourethral glands of the male.
The Skene’s glands are located on the anterior wall of the vagina and
around the lower end of the urethra.
They secrete a lubricating fluid and are homologous to the prostate
gland of the males.
32. What is areola?
The pigmented area surrounding the nipple of the mammary gland is
called areola.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
1. What is amniocentesis? Why a statutory ban is imposed on this
technique?
Amniocentesis involves taking a small sample of the amniotic
fluid that surrounds the foetus to diagnose for chromosomal
abnormalities.
It is being often misused to determine the sex of the foetus.
Once the sex of the foetus is known, there may be a chance of
female foeticide. Hence, a statutory ban on amniocentesis is
imposed.

UNIT – II
CHAPTER -4 PRINCIPLES OF INHERITANCE AND VARIATION
1. What are multiple alleles and what is multiple allelism?
When three or more alleles of a gene that control a particular trait
occupying the same locus on the homologous chromosome of an
organism, they are called multiple alleles.
The inheritance of multiple alleles is called multiple allelism.
2. What is haplodiploidy?
In this system, the sex of the offspring is determined by the number of
sets of chromosomes it receives.
Fertilized eggs develop into females (Queen or Worker). and
unfertilized eggs develop into males (drones) by parthenogenesis.
It means that the males have half the number of chromosomes
(haploid) and the females have double the number (diploid), hence the
name haplodiploidy for this system of sex determination.
3. What is a Barr body?
In 1949, Barr and Bertram first observed a condensed body in the
nerve cells of female cat which was absent in the male. This condensed
body was called sex chromatin by them and was later referred as Barr
body.
4. What is Lyon’s hypothesis?
Mary Lyon suggested that Barr bodies represented an inactive
chromosome, which in females becomes tightly coiled into a
heterochromatin, a condensed and visible form of chromatin (Lyon’s
hypothesis).
5. What is N - 1 rule?
The number of Barr bodies follows N-1 rule (N minus one rule), where
N is the total number of X chromosomes present.
6. What is criss-cross inheritance?
Colour blind trait is inherited from the male parent to his grandson
through carrier daughter, which is an example of criss-cross pattern of
inheritance.
7. Why are sex linked recessive characters more common in the male
human beings?
Sex linked inherited traits are more common in males than females
because, males are hemizygous (only one member of a chromosome
pair) and therefore express the trait when they inherit one mutant
allele.

pregnancy) are carried across the placenta into the foetal blood
circulation.
The antibodies are IgG type which are small and can cross placenta and
enter the foetal circulation. This causes haemolysis of foetal RBCs
resulting in haemolytic jaundice and anaemia. This condition is known
as Erythroblastosis fetalis or Haemolytic disease of the new born
(HDN).
17. How can erythroblastosis fetalis be prevented?
If the mother is Rh - and foetus is Rh +, anti D antibodies should be
administered to the mother at 28th and 34th week of gestation as a
prophylactic measure.
If the Rh - mother delivers Rh + child then anti D antibodies should be
administered to the mother soon after delivery. This develops passive
immunity neutralizes Rh positive foetal RBC’s. This has to be done
whenever the woman becomes pregnant.
18. Explain the mode of sex determination in honeybees.
In honeybees, haplodiploidy mechanism of sex determination is
common. In this system, the sex of the offspring is determined by the
number of sets of chromosomes it receives. Fertilized eggs develop
into females (Queen or Worker) and unfertilized eggs develop into
males (drones) by parthenogenesis. It means that the males have half
the number of chromosomes (haploid) and the females have double
the number (diploid), hence the name haplodiploidy for this system of
sex determination.
19. How does haplodiploidy facilitate the evolution of sociality in honey
bee colony?
This mode of sex determination facilitates the evolution of sociality in
which only one diploid female becomes a queen and lays the eggs for
the colony.
All other females which are diploid having developed from fertilized
eggs help to raise the queen’s eggs and so contribute to the queen’s
reproductive success and indirectly to their own, a phenomenon
known as Kin Selection.
The queen constructs their social environment by releasing a hormone
that suppresses fertility of the workers.
20. Explain how Y chromosome is responsible for male development?
Y chromosome has pseudo autosomal regions (PARs) at both the ends,
that are similar with regions on the X chromosome which synapse and
recombine during meiosis.
