Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module is an instrumental material to be used by the learners

in the Public Schools. It is an initiative way to cope-with the goals
of continuing the education despite of the present situation.

It contains nine learning stages; each lesson always starts with the
presentation of Mathematical Concepts. From there the lesson
progresses through various well- rounded mathematical exercises.
The content of these exercises has been structured to suit not only
the age level of the learner but also his experiences at home and
in school. What the learner learned in the previous stages were
reinforced by the next stage. And the last stage is the Reflection,
this is a wall were learners will write his understanding about the
lesson.

As facilitator, you are expected to impart the learners on how to

use this module. It is also expected to track and record learners’
progress while allowing them to manage on their own pace. Lastly,
you are expected to guide and assist the learners as they engaged
the exercises in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Self-Learning Module on (Module 3:

Terms Related to Circles.

This module was pattern to help you, learners, to achieve better

learning outcome and become prepared for the next grade level.
This is an approach that allows you leaners to express and solve
mathematical problems in a meaningful and easiest way.

TERMS RELATED TO
1 CIRCLE

Let us Learn!

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. define, illustrate, and name terms related to circles

2. identify the degree measure of a central angle and a minor arc.

Pre-Test
I. True or False
Write TRUE if the statement is correct but FALSE if otherwise.
________ 1. A diameter is a chord.

________2. If the diameter is 10, then the radius is 20.

________3. Central Angle is an angle whose vertex is on a circle and whose

sides contain chords of the circle.

________4. If an inscribed angle of a circle intercepts a semicircle, then the

angle is a right triangle.

________5. If a secant and a tangent intersect at the point of tangency, then

the measure of each angle formed is twice the measure of its
intercepted arc.

II. Multiple Choice

Direction. Write the letter of the correct answer on the space provided before
each item or write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

________6. A ______________ of a circle is an angle formed by two rays whose

Hello! Welcome to Lesson 1 of this Module. You are expected to finish

this lesson in one hour. However, your self-pacing is still the basis in
accomplishing all the tasks in this lesson.

Try to familiarize the following terms of the circle below.

Terms related to
Description
circle

A circle is a collection of all those points in a plane

Circle that are at a given constant distance from a given
fixed point in the plane.
It is a segment drawn from the center of the circle
Radius to any point on the circle.

It is a segment whose endpoints are on the circle

Diameter and it passes through the center of the circle. It is
the longest chord.
Chord It is a segment joining any two points on the circle.
The perimeter of a circle is called its circumference.
Circumference The circumference of a
circle of radius r is 2πr.
Secant A line that intersects a circle in two points.

2
It is a straight line which touches the circle at only
Tangent one point. This point is called the point of
tangency.
Semicircle It is an arc measuring one-half of the
circumference of a circle.
Minor arc It is an arc of a circle that measures less than a
semicircle.
The degree measure of a minor arc is the same as
the degree measure of its central angle.
Major arc It is an arc of a circle that measures
greater than a semicircle.
The degree measure of a major arc is 360 minus
the degree measure of the minor.
Central angle It is an angle whose vertex is at the center of the
circle and with two radii as its sides.
Inscribed angle It is an angle whose vertex is on a circle and whose
sides contain chords of the circle.
Intercepted arc It is an arc whose endpoints lie on a different ray of
an angle and whose other point lie in the interior of
the angle

Using Figure 1, we will examine every part of a circle.

These are the parts of ⨀ O.

1. radius- OV , OL , OZ, OT
2. diameter- ZV
43⁰
3. chords- ZV , ZM , CA
4. semicircles- VTZ , ZLV, ZMV
5. minor arcs- CT, CA, TV, TA, VL,
LM, MZ
6. major arcs – VTM , TAM, TAL ,
CLT , ZLA , ZMT
LZ=137⁰
7. central angles - ∠LOV, ∠LOT,
∠VOT, ∠LOZ
8. inscribed angle- ∠MZV

Figure 1

3
9. What would be the degree measurement of VL?

The degree measure of a minor arc is the same as the degree measure of
its central angle. Since m∠LOV= 43⁰, VL = 43⁰.

10. What would be the degree measurement of ∠LOZ?

Since LOZ= 137⁰, m∠LOZ = 137⁰.

KNOW MY TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Use the figure below to identify and name the following terms related to ⨀ A.
Then, answer the questions that follow.

1. radius- _____ , _____ , _____

2. diameter- _____
3. chord- _____ , _____
4. semicircle- _____ , _____
5. minor arc- _____ , _____ , _____
, _____
6. major arc – _____ , _____ , _____
, _____ , _____
7. central angles - _____ , _____
8. inscribed angles- _____ , _____

9. What would be the degree measurement of JN if m∠JAN= 84⁰?

10. What would be the degree measurement of ∠NAE of NE = 102⁰?

Let us Practice More

Find me!

Given the circle O below, name the following: (Be sure to use proper
notation).
P
_______1. 1 semicircle
_______2. 1 inscribed angle
_______3. 1 major arc U
_______4. 1 central angle
_______5. 1 chord
O
_______6. 1 radius Q T
_______7. 1 minor arc
_______8. 1 intercepted arc

R S

Circles, no doubt, play a huge part in our day-to-day lives. Circles are
interesting. Unlike any other shapes, these do not contain edges, but form
arcs and angles. Circle is a set of all points equidistant from a given point
called center. It is named by its center and indicated by the symbol ⊙.
Example ⊙P can be read as circle with center P. The measure of the entire
circle is 360°.

Let us Assess

THE CIRCLE BEHIND THE CURE

An elderly scientist had discovered a vaccine for COVID-19 and put it

inside his personal vault. Unfortunately, because of excitement he had a
heart attack one night. But before he died, he scribbled a hint for his 4-

into the different shapes its corresponding answer. Draw the right shapes
on the monitor in order.
