Introduction

ICT is a short form that stands for Information

Communication Technology. A good way to think about ICT is
all the equipment and methods used by people to handle
information. It combines the technology of computing and
telecommunications so that a large amount of data can be
stored and transmitted. Televisions, computers, satellites,
and telephones are just some of the types of equipment used
in ICT.
I- ADVANTAGES

some of the advantages of ICT that we have is that ICT is so

important in the world today, that it makes it easier for every
person to acquire a certain competency int he management
of computer tools. For the task they are to accomplish. And
some of these advantages include:

a.Education
In many societies, the potential for increasing access to and
improving the relevance and quality of education through
ICT:
 Educators have the ability and courage to make a
positive contribution. making such a contribution is a
challenge and teachers must happily exploit new techniques
and learning opportunities.

 Today, most schools and higher educational institutions

have atteast a computers laboratory for both teachers and
students. Technology can support learning in many ways
same of these ways are;
 The fact that some teachers see if better to teach with
the aid of computer die to the fact that if captivates and
holds students attention.

 computer can also provide many, effective, and good

qualities opportunities for teaching and learning skills which
provide the learners with a good skill-building practice and
the ability to institutional resources.

b) Communication

With the help of ICT, Communication has become easier,

quicker, and more efficient. earlier, only large computers had
communication capabilities. Today, even the smallest
computers and devices can able communicate with each
other.

- Today we have the ability to exchange informations with

another through the use of computers with just the aid of
internet connection.
- cost-effectiveness : ICT has helped to make computerize the
business process this streamlining businesses to make them
cost-effective money making machines.

c) Healthcare
The ICT revolution is having huge effects on the
pharmaceutical industry and on the delivery of health
services.

ICT benefits to the patient: A complete medical history of

patients. and updated easily through online access, patients
freed from taking prescriptions for hospitals for further
treatment. Also, online medical advice can be taken easily
means you don’t have to go to the hospital.

ICT benefits to the doctor: To improve the efficiency and

effectiveness of the antiquated healthcare system. doctors
would be able to access complete patient records through
they did not create them. The system will save doctors time
overall, the use of health care has clear benefits.

d) Impact And Benefits of ICT On Society

The impact of ICT on society seems to have been a global

change which has an impact as large as that since the birth of
the telephones by alexander graham bell the (inventor of the
telephone.
Faster communication speed: In the past, it took long time to
get any information or news to be send or to be known. Now
with the internet all this became possible to share with
everyone with no more time.

Low communication cost: Using the internet is cost-effective

than other modes of communication such as telephone, or
courier services. It allows peoples to have access to a large
amount of data at a very low cost.

Sharing of information: with the technological advancement

of ICT, information can be easily shared by people all over the
world. people can share or exchange opinions, news, and
information through discussion groups, mailing lists, and
forums on the internet.

e) Career opportunities in IT

Nowadays, the computer industry is one of the larger

worldwide industries. the industry has created thousands of
high technologies jobs, even in companies whose primary
business is not computer related.
Job availability in the computer industry generally is available
in one or more of these sectors:
* General business and their IT departments
* Common equipment field
* Computer software field
* Computer service and repair field
* IT consulting
* Computer sales
* Computer education and training field

f) Governance

ICT also affects government by improving responsiveness,

increasing efficiency, and enhancing governance practices.
government can encourage the diffusion of ICT through their
supply of online services and their own use of technologies.
The internet gives governments the opportunity to offer
public services plans and to give information and policies
related information more efficiently.
The more public services can be delivered through electronic
media such as the internet, the larger the potential savings.
Processing documents, such as licenses, or collecting taxes
electronically are examples of such possibilities
II. Disadvantages

1. Reduction in available job opportunities

for humans Organizations consider technology a better

“employee” when it’s utilized in the production
processes of the business. Not only can work be finished
on time, but also certain processes can be automated for
ease of operation. Hence, software tools have the
capacity to perform tasks that are meant for human
employees. The implication of this is that they have
become a competition for humans as companies don’t
see the need to hire as many individuals for jobs that can
be carried out by fewer employees and a smart
software. While this decrease in the demand for human
labour may be good news to business employers, it is
however not advantageous to human workers. When
technology is employed instead of humans, business
ventures see no essence of hiring them. Consequently,
the rate of unemployment increases and the society has
more people who are struggling to feed their household
and pay their bills. It is thus important that companies
understand how to employ human workers instead of
simply laying them off as a result of technological
advancements. For instance, it’s better if business
enterprises can retrain their workers, and after the
training, the employees should be reassigned to execute
other roles and occupy new positions that machines
cannot. Moreover, it’s pertinent to remember that
technological devices will only function optimally when
they are operated by skilled human employees.

2. Advancement in technology

has made employees anti-social Technology has

introduced channels for individuals to communicate with
each other without necessarily having to be within the
same region. This is possible thanks to several
communication tools such as Skype. As a result, business
colleagues can hold conference meetings from different
parts of the world. As wonderful as this is, the problem
is that the bulk of human communication has moved
online. Meanwhile, employees who have adopted the
use of technological devices for the vast majority of their
communications experience a deterioration in their
social skills. There’s been a change in individual
behaviors because they are used to spending most of
their time using technological devices like laptops and
mobile phones.

3. Excessive dependence on technological devices

As we all know, technological devices are useful in the

automation of complicated enterprise processes. This is
great for your company. However, all machines can
breakdown at any point due to several factors. When
that happens, production operations are suddenly
halted and this can throw your business into a state of
panic. When work is automated, people tend to depend
too much on technological devices. As a result, they feel
it is unnecessary to understand how these processes can
be carried out manually. The entire business operation
comes to a halt whenever there’s a problem with the
technological devices. This is why as a business owner;
you should not allow your operations to be solely
dependent on technological applications. Train your
workers so they know what to do whenever the
technological applications are malfunctioning. In
addition, you should have full manuals that specify what
should be done to get the company and business
operations ruining in the unforeseen case of a device
failure.

4. Costs of implementation and regulatory compliance

It takes time and money to get new solutions

implemented. Typically, business services become
interrupted as new phases of the operations are
implemented. Extra employee training is needed and
customers may have to endure a decline in the quality of
service during the process of the implementation.

5. Cybercriminality
The rise in the use of ICT has led to new types of crimes
such as: identity theft of identity, Blackmail-extortion…
Fortunately, measures are being taken to reduce the
impact of these and prevent them.

Conclusion

The explanations above are just some of the advantages and

disadvantages of using ICT. The good news is that efforts are
being made to reduce dependence and crimes on the
Internet through stricter regulation and data utilization-
oriented taxation. Nevertheless, the benefits remain largely
gaining, thus reducing consideration for the risks that
nevertheless remain present.
