What is area?
The area can be defined as the space occupied by a flat shape or the surface of an object.

The area of a figure is the number of unit squares that cover the surface of a closed figure.

Area is measured in square units such as square centimetres, square feet, square inches, etc.

● The areas of common plane shapes are as follows:

o Rectangle = L × W

o Square = L²

o Parallelogram = Base × Height

o Triangle = ½ × Base × Height

o Trapezium = ½ h(a + b)

o Circle = πr²

Questions

1. Calculate the area of a rectangle 6 cm by 3.5 cm. 1. 6 X 3.5= 21CM
2. 16 X W=224
2. The area of a rectangle is 224 cm². If its length is 16 cm, calculate the width. W=224/16
a= L X W WIDTH=14
3. The area of a square plot is 144 m². Calculate the length of a side of the plot.
3. A= LX L
2 144/4
Area of a square 144cm LENGTH=36m
4. An assembly area is in the shape of a 30 m by 30 m square. Part of the area is a

concrete rectangle 25 m by 5m, the rest is grass. Calculate the area of the grass.

SQUARE AREA= L X L RECTANGLE AREA= L X W

AREA OF GRASS = 900m - 625m = 275m

5. Calculate the area of a parallelogram if its base2is 9.2 cm and its height is 6 cm.
9.2cm X 6 cm= 55.2cm
6. In the figure below, the base of the parallelogram is 6 cm and its height is 4 cm.

Calculate the area of the parallelogram. If the length of the other side of the

parallelogram is 8 cm, calculate the corresponding height, h.
6 + 4 + 8 +h =24
18+h=24
