By knowing the density of different materials, you can have an idea on which of them
will float or sink in water. Mercury, iron and stone will sink at the bottom because they
are denser compared to water. Wood, oil and air certainly are less dense than water,
that’s why they like to stay at the top of the water. Materials of the same composition
will always have the same density.
Density (ρ) – the mass per unit volume of a material. The SI unit for density is kg/m 3.
A pure gold ring and a gold necklace will have different shapes and sizes but it will
always have the same density regardless of their shape. All materials of the same type
will have the same value for density.

Specific Gravity – the density ratio between a material and a standard material. For
liquids, use water density as the standard material (1000kg/m 3 at 4⁰C) and for
gases, use oxygen density as the standard material (1.43 kg/m3 at 0⁰C). A substance
with a specific gravity of less than 1 will float in water.

Example: A hard wood with a dimension of 1m x 0.2m x 0.2m has a mass of 32kg.
Calculate for its density and specific gravity.
Solution:
Density Specific Gravity
𝑚 32𝑘𝑔 𝜌 800𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
ρ= = 1𝑚 𝑥 0.2𝑚 𝑥 0.2𝑚 = 800kg/m3 Specific Gravity = 𝜌 𝑆𝑈𝐵 = 1000𝑘𝑔/𝑚3 =

Directions: Answer the problems below by applying what you have learned.
1. Your grandmother gave you a gold ring as a gift. The gold ring is 5mm thick and
has an outside diameter of 12mm and an inside diameter of 11mm. The density of
gold is 1.93 x 104 kg/m3.
C. What is the market value of the ring if the price of gold is P1836.15 per gram?

Activity Key Answers
1.A. Vring = (Aouter circle – Ainner circle) x thickness = (π(6mm)2 – π(5.5mm)2) x 5mm = 90.32mm3
1m 3
1.B. Convert the volume to m3: 90.32mm3 ቀ ቁ = 9.032 x 10-8 m3
1000mm
Calculate for the mass in kg: m = ρV = (1.93 x 104kg/m3)(9.032 x 10-8 m3) = 1.74 x 10-3 kg = 1.74g
1.C. Price = 1.74g x 1836.15 pesos = 3194.90 pesos
1.D. V = 9.032 x 10-8 m3
1.E. m = 1.74 x 10-3 kg
ρSUB 721kg/m3
2. Specific Gravity = = = 0.72
ρSTAN 1000 kg/m3
3.A. ρ = specific gracity x ρstandard = 0.92 x 1000 = 920 kg/m3
3.B. m = ρV = 920kg/m3 x 0.001m3 = 0.92kg
3.C. It will settle at the top because it has a lower density compared to water.
3.D. Cooking oil
