GENETIC ENGINEERING: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Genes are important to living organisms since they are responsible for their unique
characteristics and properties. The study and development of genes have come a long way in the
field of science and research. Humans have been doing genetic engineering since the rule of
heredity was first postulated by Gregor Mendel, father of genetics, in 1850.

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, genetic engineering refers to the group of

applied techniques of genetics and biotechnology used to cut up and join together genetic
material and especially DNA from one or more species of organism and to introduce the result
into an organism in order to change one or more of its characteristics. Scientific research in the
field of genetic engineering shows that this technology has been used in transforming the world
by modifying plants, animals and even humans. This process led to the development of “tailor-
made” organisms that will help them better serve their functions such as the creation of crop
varieties that can greatly increase crop yield, trees that can help fight global warming and other
species that can help improve the ecosystem. In addition to these advantages, genetic technology
can also help in providing cure and solution for different diseases affecting the human
population. This technology can soon help eradicate common diseases such as cancer, diabetes,
malaria and dengue.

Just like any other techniques in the field of science and research, genetic engineering
cannot escape what is considered by other researchers as its bad side or its disadvantages.
Genetic engineering entails genetic technologies which are costly. Such technology has limited
accessibility only for those who are well off in life, thereby increasing the disparity between the
rice and the poor. Companies engaged in this genetic engineering will definitely need more funds
to defray their expenses and to continue with their research and development. Hence, it is
expected that they will put a high price tag in their products. Researchers claim that genetic
engineering shapes the future of medicine. But this does not mean that it can be available to all
people in the world. This future of medicine is prone to corruption and abuse. Wealthy people
who posses the ability to pay this technology can easily take advantage of it and profit from the
same. It cannot be said that it is for the advancement of humanity if it will benefit only a portion
of the population.
The ugly part of genetic engineering involves ethical concerns and law of nature. The
modifications introduced by genetic engineering can lead to the modification of the human body.
Scientists and researchers will be definitely tempted to test and explore the limits of genetic
engineering. This can potentially lead to the production of super-humans or genetically-modified
humans in the future. With this, genetical engineering will definitely break legal, ethical and
moral boundaries since misuse and abuse will always be just around the corner. Some people are
willing to defy the law of nature for the advancement of society. But the way things are in
accordance to nature should also be respected. Nature has its own ways for advancement.
