Use single answer script

You must submit the hard copy of this answer script to the Department when
the university reopens.

institutional email within the allocated time. Uploading clear and readable scan
copy (uncorrupted) is your responsibility and must cover the full page of your
answer script. However, for clear and readable scan copy of the answer script
student should use only one side of a page for answering the questions.
vi) You must avoid plagiarism, maintain academic integrity, and ethics. You are
not allowed to take any help from another individual and if taken so can result
in stern disciplinary actions from the university authority.
vii) Marks allotted are indicated in the right margin.
viii) Necessary charts/tables are attached at the end of the question paper. You may
use graph papers where necessary.

Question 1. [Marks: 12.5]

a) The beam shown in Fig.1 is subjected to concentrated loads as shown. If the beam has [6.5]
moment of inertia, I = 40.8×106 mm4 and modulus of elasticity, E = 200 GPa. Determine
the deflection (represent in mm) and slope of the beam at C, using Conjugate-Beam
method.

b) For the beam shown in Fig.2, determine the maximum deflection (represent in mm) of [6]
the beam using Direct Integration method. Use, E =200 GPa and I = 40.8×106 mm4.

a) For the beam shown in Fig.3, determine the deflection (represent in mm) at the midpoint [12.5]
of the beam using Moment-Area method. Use E=200 GPa and I =12.8×106 mm4.

a) The state of plane stress at a point with respect to the xy-axes is shown in Fig.4. Using the [6.5]
general equations of plane stress transformation, determine (1) the maximum in-plane
shear stress, the associated normal stress and its location; also (2) the equivalent state of
stress with respect to the inclined plane. Show all results on sketches of properly oriented
elements.

b) The solid brass shaft shown in Fig.5 has a diameter of 50 mm. If it is subjected to two [6]
torques, determine the reactions at the fixed supports A and B. Use, G = 39 GPa.

Question 4. [Marks: 12.5]


a) The W100 × 19.3 section in Fig.6, carries a M (N-m) bending moment inclined at 30 to [6.5]
the z-axis, as shown. Determine (1) the angle between the neutral axis and the z-axis; and
(2) the largest bending stress (represent in MPa) acting on the section.

b) The rectangular block of negligible weight in Fig.7, is subjected to a vertical force of P [6]
(kN), which is applied to its edge. Determine the largest normal stress acting on a section

Question 5. [Marks: 12.5]


a) A W250 × 67 section is used as a simply supported column of 6m length. When the P [6.5]
(kN) load is applied with 100 mm eccentricity as shown in Fig.8, determine (1) the
maximum compressive stress (represent in MPa) in the column and (2) the maximum
lateral deflection. Assume that the column does not buckle about the y‐axis. Use, modulus
of elasticity, E = 200 GPa and yield stress, σy = 250 MPa.

b) A rectangular structural tube having the cross section shown in Fig.9, is used as a both [6]
end fixed column of 7m length. Knowing that σy = 250 MPa and E = 200 GPa, use AISC
ASD formulas to determine the largest centric load that can be applied to the steel column
without buckling.
