Concept Mapping: A Tool For Creating A Literature Review

1. The document outlines an experiment on creating concept maps for literature surveys. It provides background on what concept mapping is and how it can help with research. 2. Students are instructed to create a concept map of one research paper and of their overall literature survey. They are to submit the concept maps and describe the concepts and links. 3. The goal is for students to understand relationships between research articles, summarize information from different sources, and design a concept map of their literature survey.

PART A

(PART A : TO BE REFFERED BY STUDENTS)

Experiment No.04

A.1 Aim:

To design/create concept map of literature survey

A.2 Prerequisite:
1. Knowledge of interested domain
2. Clear idea of chosen topic

A.3 Outcome:
After successful completion of this experiment students will be able to

1. Understand the relationship of multiple research articles on the selected topic

2. Summarize the information obtained from different sources
3. Design concept map of literature survey on the selected topic

A.4 Theory:

CONCEPT MAPPING: A TOOL FOR CREATING A LITERATURE REVIEW

Concept maps visually represent relationships of different concepts. In research, they can help us
make connections between ideas. In other words, A concept map is a visualization of key idea in
research and the relationships between them.

To create a concept map, pick out the main concepts of the topic and brainstorm everything we
know about them, drawing shapes around our concepts and clustering the shapes in a way that's
meaningful.

Need of concept map:

 Helps to see the broader area for literature of chosen topic
 identify additional search terms during the literature search,
 Can help identify the subject-based tool where literature can be found.
 clarify thinking about the structure of the literature review in preparation for
writing the review and understand theory, concepts and the relationships
between them

Approaches for conducting research using concept maps:

Three main approaches for conducting research using concept maps as a tool emerged:

1. Word frequency : identify the keyword to search literature

2. Relational: make the relations of literature that you have found
3. Cluster: group the related literature

These approaches are included in the different phases of research process such as data
collection, analysis, and presentation. Each approach revealed strengths and limitations that
researchers need to take into account.

How to create a Concept map

Concept map, usually starts with a general concept at the top of the map, and then works its way
down to more specific concepts. Concepts are placed in a box, while linking words are on line.
Lines are drawn from a concept to a linking word to a concept.

The Concept Mapping method involves the following steps:

 Define the topic or focuses question.

 Once the key topic has been defined, the next step is to identify and list the most
important concepts that are associated with that topic.
 Next, those concepts are ordered top to bottom in the mapping field, going from most
general and inclusive to the most specific
 Once the key concepts have been identified and ordered, links are added to form a
preliminary Concept Map.
 Linking phrases are added to describe the relationships among concepts.
 Once the preliminary Concept Map has been built, a next step is to look for crosslinks,
which link together concepts that are in different areas or sub-domains on the map.
Cross-links help to elaborate how concepts are interrelated.

Hints: Concept Maps that attempt to cover more than one questions/objectives may become
difficult to manage and read. Try to make different concept maps of different
objectives/questions.

A.5. TASKS:

1. Create the concept map of any one research paper/article

(Students are supposed to create the concept map of any one research paper/article which has
been used in experiment 3. Each student will create one concept map. If there are 3 students in a
group so 3 concept maps will be created for 3 different papers)

2.Create the concept map of literature survey

(Students are supposed to create one concept map of their literature survey papers which have
been used for experiment 3.)
