Abstract
In the present-day scenario, many times we see that the garbage bins or Dust bin are placed at
public places in the cities are overflowing due to increase in the waste every day. It creates
unhygienic condition for the people and creates bad smell around the surroundings this leads
in spreading some deadly diseases & human illness, to avoid such a situation we are planning
to design “Smart Waste Management System using IoT”.In this proposed System there are
multiple dustbins located throughout the city or the Campus, these dustbins are provided with
low cost embedded device which helps in tracking the level of the garbage bins and an unique
ID will be provided for every dustbin in the city so that it is easy to identify which garbage
bin is full. When the level reaches the threshold limit, the device will transmit the level along
with the unique ID provided. These details can be accessed by the concern authorities from
their place with the help of Internet and an immediate action can be made to clean the
dustbins
Introduction
Things that are connected to Internet and sometimes these devices can be controlled from the
internet is commonly called as Internet of Things. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept in
which surrounding objects are connected through wired and wireless networks without user
intervention. Owing to the characteristics and merits of IoT services, waste management has
also become a significant issue in academia, industry, and government as major IoT
application fields. An indiscriminate and illegal discharge of waste, an absence of waste
management systems, and inefficient waste management policies have caused serious
environmental problems. In the recent years, there was a rapid growth in population which
leads to more waste disposal. So, a proper waste management system is necessary to avoid
spreading some deadly diseases. Managing the smart bins by monitoring the status of it and
accordingly taking the decision. This waste is further picked up by the municipal corporations
to finally dump it in dumping areas and landfills. There are multiple dustbins are located
throughout the city or the Campus In our system, the Smart dust bins are connected to the

internet to get the real time information of the smart dustbins. These dustbins are interfaced
with Arduino UNO based system with ultrasonic sensors. Where the ultrasonic sensor detects
the level of the dust in dustbin and sends the signals to Arduino UNO the same signal is
encoded and send to the application and it is received. The data has been received, analysed
and processed in the database, which displays the status of the Garbage in the dustbin on the
application of authorized person mobile. The concerned authority get alert about dustbin is
full and informs person whoever is responsible for collecting garbage from the particular
areas. The garbage trucks collect the garbage from the completely full dustbin and dispose it.
Problem Statement
Instead of using plenty of bins in an unordered fashion around the city, we can have minimal
no. of smart bins that can be placed that are feasible and affordable. As we have seen all
around us, the dustbins are getting overflown and concerned municipal authorities usually
don’t get information within the stimulated time.
Proposed Methodology
The garbage containers transmit signals to indicate that they are over 80% or 90% full and
should be emptied. Via the mobile communications network, the signals are sent to a web-
based software application used by the waste management company. In the software, the
capacity of the container is indicated, which is taken as a basis to plan the best route for waste
collection garbage trucks travel only to those containers that actually need to be emptied. A
robust ultrasonic sensor is installed in the garbage container and detects the fill level
regardless of what has been deposited inside. The whole system contains Ultrasonic sensor,
Arduino board, GSM module, bread board, power supply (battery). The sensor is fixed on to
the bread board. The connection between the Arduino board and sensor is made with the help
of connecting wires. The working program is fed into the Arduino board. The gsm module is
also connected to the same Arduino board with the help of wires. The power supply to the
system is given with the help of a battery.

7) PHP 8) MySQL
Advantages
Less time and fuel consumption as the trucks go only to the filled containers.
Decreased noise, traffic flow and air pollution as a result of less trucks on the roads.
Our smart operating system enables two-way communication between the dustbin
deployed in the city and service operator. Therefore, the focus is only on collection of
route-based fill level of the containers.
The sensors installed in the containers provide real time information on the fill level.
This information helps determine when and where to priorities collection
Reduces the infrastructure (trucks, containers), operating (fuel) and maintenance costs
of the service by up to 30%.
Conclusion
Hence, we tend to conclude that, by implementing this project we will determine the
stuffed-up dustbins and give indication to the GCV (Garbage Collector Vehicle). And so,
it does not produce any user inconvenience caused by advanced discharge method and
odor nuisance.
