Handouts For Health Informatics PDF

Health informatics is the study of how healthcare is organized and delivered using information systems and technology. It focuses on understanding information processes, developing interventions to improve healthcare systems, and evaluating the impact of these interventions. Some tools used in health informatics include clinical guidelines, decision support systems, electronic health records, and communication systems.

HEALTH INFORMATICS

Health informatics is the study of how we think about healthcare, the way treatments
are defined, selected and evolved. This is how we organize ourselves or the patients &professionals
to create and run healthcare organizations. Informatics is as fundamental to medicine and
healthcare delivery today as anatomy or pathology was in the past.

The study of Health of informatics

• how we think about healthcare, the way treatments are defined, selected and evolved

• how we organise ourselves (patients & professionals), to create and run healthcare orgs.

• INFORMATICS is as fundamental to medicine and healthcare delivery today as anatomy or

pathology was in the past

1. Review on the definition terms:

• Physiology
o is the science of life. It is the branch of biology that aims to understand the
mechanisms of living things, from the basis of cell function at the ionic and
molecular level to the integrated behavior of the whole body and the influence of
the external environment. Physiology is an experimental science.

• Pathology
o is a branch of medical science that involves the study and diagnosis of disease
through the examination of surgically removed organs, tissues (biopsy samples),
bodily fluids, and in some cases the whole body (autopsy).
o The word "pathology" comes from the Greek words:
▪ "pathos" meaning "disease" and "logos" meaning "study”

• Health
o Is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the
absence of a certain disease.

• Healthcare
o is the maintenance or improvement of health via the prevention, diagnosis,
treatment, recovery, or cure of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and
mental impairments in people.

• Health Informatics
o is defined as “the integration of healthcare sciences, computer science, information
science, and cognitive science to assist in the management of healthcare
information” (Saba & McCormick, 2015)
Tools used in Health Informatics

Tools:

• Clinical Guidelines
• Decision Support Systems
• Formal Health Languages
• Electronic Records
• Communication Systems e.g. (social media)

Discussion:

Clinical guidelines are systematically developed statements that intend to assist clinicians and
patients in making decisions about appropriate health care in specific circumstances. Guidelines aim
to improve the quality of patient care by encouraging interventions of proven benefit and
discouraging the use of ineffective or potentially harmful interventions; to reduce unnecessary
variation in practice; to lessWen disparities; to empower patients; and to influence public policy.

Decision support systems or DSS are computer-based programs that analyze data within Electronic
Health Records or EHRs to provide prompts and reminders to assist health care providers in
implementing evidence-based clinical guidelines at the point of care. Clinical decision support system
or CDSS is an application that analyzes data to help healthcare providers make decisions and improve
patient care. It is a variation of the DSS commonly used to support business management. A CDSS
focuses on using knowledge management to get clinical advice based on multiple factors of patient-
related data. Clinical decision support systems enable integrated workflows, provide assistance at
the time of care and offer care plan recommendations. Formal Health languages are standard terms
being used in the healthcare system. Electronic records are data that is stored in a electrical unit or
system example is health information system. Communication systems example are social media.

History of Health Informatics:

• First came into use around 1973

• It was born on the day when a clinician wrote down patient’s impression in aid of
diagnosis and treatment
• Evolved together with advancement in computer technology
• Provide better access to rich communication systems

We can formally say that H.I. is:

• the study of information and communication processes and systems

in HEALTHCARE.

In other terms:

The study of information and communication processes and systems in Healthcare.

Health Informatics focuses on:

• Understanding the fundamental nature of information and communication

processes and their principles
• Developing interventions for improvement
• Developing methods and principles to allow such interventions
• Evaluating the impact of these interventions
Health Informatics also has subspecialties:

• Clinical Informatics: use of info in support of patient care.

o A clinical information system or CIS is an information system designed
specifically for use in the critical care environment, such as in an Intensive
Care Unit (ICU). It can network with the many computer systems in a modern
hospital, such as pathology and radiology. It draws information from all these
systems into an electronic patient record, which clinicians can see at the
patient’s bedside.

• Bioinformatics: use of genomic and other biological information.

o As an interdisciplinary field of science, bioinformatics combines biology,
computer science, information engineering, mathematics and statistics to
analyze and interpret the biological data. Bioinformatics has been used for in
silico analyses of biological queries using mathematical and statistical
techniques.
