Data Handling & Data Processing
Data Handling & Data Processing
Objective 7: Explain how the growth of the Internet impact on data handling and data
processing;
Data processing focuses on operations such as: entering, storing, updating and retrieving of
information using a computer. On the other hand, data handling can be defined as the way in
which data is accessed, manipulated, and treated or taken care of. Over the years, the internet has
been rapidly growing into a powerful tool for data handling and data processing all around the
globe.
One-way the internet has impacted how data handling and processing is by the use of the intranet
and extranet. The intranet is a network used by persons within an organization to share
information, whilst the extranet is a network, which provides access for persons outside of the
organization.
Generally, the use of the internet for data handling has made it more efficient, provided
improved speed, cost savings and security options. The use of e-mails has allowed for data and
information to be sent and received within seconds, which is also cost-effective as it is soft copy
opposed to hardcopy, including the faxing of documents and posted letters. Traditional methods
of storing data, namely filing cabinets, which were time and space consuming can now be
eliminated or somewhat limited in their use, as storage can now be done using computerized
databases, which stores information in one location, in digital form.
Data streaming on demand (skype, podcast, twitter, live video streaming). People can now
communicate live with the aid of webcams or video recorders worldwide, without traveling,
making phone calls or writing letters. This has become a very efficient way of communicating
with friends and family, and even businesses use this technique. Meetings are able to be held via
live video streaming.
The internet has also changed the ways in which we find data. With the use of Search Engine
Optimization, entries made online are collected (data mining) and saved in online databases (data
warehouse & data mart) allowing for easy access and retrieval of information. Search engines
such as; Google, Bing, Yahoo and MSN has now replaced traditional dictionaries, textbooks, etc.
Objective 8: Explain how the absence of data quality, accuracy, and timeliness will impact
on organizations;
Poor data quality gives rise to poor decisions. A decision can be no better than the information
upon which it’s based, and critical decisions based on poor-quality data can have very serious
consequences. This is another reason why you should make sure that your data actually
represents reality.
Poor data quality creates mistrust. Poor data quality can reflect adversely on your organization,
lowering customer confidence. If the data’s wrong, time, money, and reputations can be lost.
Due to the rapid changes in data, the “timeliness” of some data is very short. If companies can’t collect
the required data in real time or deal with the data needs over a very long time, then they may obtain out
dated and invalid information. Processing and analysis based on these data will produce useless or
misleading conclusions, eventually leading to decision-making mistakes by governments or enterprises.
