Contemporary Art Techniques

Many contemporary Artist do not have formal education in the fine arts but are self-taught. They
explore, study on their own, read and interact among other artists to learn.
Technique is the manner in which the artists use and manipulate materials to achieve the desired
formal effect, and communicate the desired concept, or meaning, according to his or her own personal
style.

1. COLLAGE- derives from the French verb coller means to glue. The work of art is made by gluing
things to the surface; a piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as
photographs and pieces of paper or fabric onto a backing.

2. DECALCOMANIA - French is a decorative technique by which engravings and prints may be


transferred to pottery or other materials. Today the shortened version is "Decal"; A
transfer technique, developed in the 18th century, in which ink, paint, or another medium is
spread onto a surface and, while still wet, covered with material such as paper, glass, or aluminum
foil, which, when removed, transfers a pattern that may be further embellished upon

3. DECOUPAGE - cut-up technique is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper
cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf and other decorative elements.

4. FROTTAGE - the artist takes a pastel or pencil or other drawing tool and makes a rubbing over an
uneven surface. The drawing can be left as it is or used as the basis for further refinement.

5. MONTAGE -the technique of combining in a single composition pictorial element from various
sources, as parts of different photographs or fragments of printing, either to give the illusion that
the elements belonged together originally or to allow each element to retain its separate identity as
a means of adding interest or meaning to the composition. A montage is an assembly of images
that relate to each other in some way to create a single work or part of a work of art.

6. TRAPUNTO - quilting in which only the design, which is outlined with parallel lines of stitches, is
padded to give it a raised look. Pacita Abad is one of the famous trapunto artist.

7. DIGITAL APPLICATION - an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as an essential
part of the creative or presentation process.

Filipino Artists’ Roles and Their Contribution to Contemporary Arts

1. Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa


(Architecture)- is a Filipino architect noted
his Filipino inspired architectural designs.
His most notable work is The Coconut
Palace and San Miguell Corporation
Building. His other notable works include
the EDSA Shrine, the Davao Pearl Farm,
and Amanpulo resorts.

(PAINTING)- a

contemporary Filipino

his distinctive use of

notable work is the

2. Pacita Abad (Painter)-


Philippine- American
contemporary painter born in
Basco Batanes. During her
career, Pacita created over
4,500 artworks. Her paintings
were exhibited in more than
200 museums and galleries
around the world. She is also
a trapunto artist.

5. Jean Pierre Lao
(DECORATIVE)-
graduated from
University of the
Philippines, Diliman,
College of Fine Arts.
He is a famous tattoo
artist.

10. Marilou Diaz Abaya (FILM)- was


a multi-awarded film director from
the Philippines. She was the
founder of Marilou-Diaz Abaya
Film Institute and Arts Center, a
film school based in Antipolo City.
She was the director of 1998 Jose
Rizal, a biographical film on the
Philippines’ National Hero and
Muro Ami

9. University Theater Guild


(THEATER)- “Walang ibang

8. Bayanihan (DANCE)- The


Bayanihan Philippine National

all Filipino dances, dress and
songs.

7. Freddie Aguilar (MUSIC)- known


as Ka Freddie, is a folk musician
from the Philippines. He is best
known for his rendition of “Bayan
Ko”, which became the anthem for
the opposition to the Marcos
regime during 1986 People Power
Revolution and for his song
“Anak”, the best-selling Philippine
music record of all time.

6. Gary Valenciano (MUSIC)- from


NCR, also known as Gary V. and
Mr. Pure Energy is a multi-
awarded Filipino- Puerto-Rican,
singer-songwriter, musician, actor,
music producer and TV host.
Valenciano has released 39
albums and won the Awit- Awards
for “Best Male Performer” twelve
times.

14. Wilson Baldemor
(SCULPTURE)- a filipino
sculpture, printmaker, writer and
book illustrator born in Paete,
Laguna. Most of his subjects in art
are his hometown, its people, their
everyday activities and their
celebration

13. Julie Lluch (SCULPTURE)- a
sculptor known for her expressive
portrayals of women in clay from
Region 10, Iligan. Her earlier
works tended to focus on gender
issues, suing playful symbols. In
late 1990’s she has created a
realistic sculptures of women and
some portrait sculptures.

12. Harry Mark Gonzales- a sculptor.


His famous artwork are the series
of Reflection. Since he was a
child, Gonzales loved to draw and
work with clay.

11. Tanghalang SLU (Saint Louis


University)- is the resident theater
company of Saint Louis University
created in 1998, Baguio City.
Some of their plays were “Walang
Sugat”, “Tonyo/Pepe” and “Mga
Ina ng Bayan”.
