UNIT 1 Lesson 1: HUMANITIES ARTS IN THE WESTERN CONCEPT

1. What subjects / human disciplines are being studied in humanities? Describe each.
The humanities include the academic disciplines of philosophy, religion, literatures,
linguistics, history, and the arts.
 Philosophy – it is the systematic study of ideas and issues, a reasoned
pursuit of fundamental truths, a quest for comprehensive understanding of
the world, and a study of principles of conduct.
 Religion – it is human being’s relation to which they regard as sacred,
holy, divine, absolute, spiritual, or worthy of special reverence. It is also
commonly regarded as consisting of the way people deal with ultimate
concerns about their lives and their fate after death.
 Literature – it is a body of written works. This has been traditionally
applied to those imaginative works of poetry and prose distinguished by
the intentions of their authors and the perceived aesthetic excellence of
execution.
 Linguistics – it is the scientific study of language and its structure,
including the study of morphology, syntax, phonetics, and semantics.
 History – it refers to the study and interpretation of the record of humans,
societies, institutions, and any topic that has changed over time.
Traditionally, the study of history has been considered a part of the
humanities.
 Arts – it is a creative activity that expresses imaginative or technical skill.
It produces a product, an object. Art is a diverse range of human activities
in creating visual, performing artifacts, and expressing the author's
imaginative mind.

2. Briefly describe difference between art creation and art appreciation.


Art creation is the bringing of new significant things and create their form of art.
It is the human act of generating and using of various elements to form art. On the other
hand, art appreciation refers to the exploration and analysis of the art forms we are
exposed to. It can be highly subjective, depending on an individual’s personal tastes and
preferences, or can be done on the bases of several ground such as elements of design
and mastery displayed in the piece.

3. Give at least four reasons why do we need to study science and humanities?
Through the study of humanities and social sciences, student will develop the
ability to;
 Question, think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, make
decisions, and adapt to change.
 Have an understanding of the human experience and the relationships
between and among individuals and groups within a society
 Expand our knowledge of human
cultures and help us understand what binds
us together and what differentiate us from
one another.
 Seek answers to human questions
and further investigate on the solutions we
made.

4. The word “humanitas” comes from


the Latin word “humanus” which means
human, cultured, and refined. Looking at the illustration above, what distinguishes
humanitas from divinitas and barbaritas?
Humanitas is a state of one having virtue which means that people in the state of
culture in civilized society. Meanwhile, Divinitas is a divine perspective where there are
gods in the state of perfection in heaven. Lastly, Barbaritas are brute people in the state
for natural survival.

inspiration from the Bible and the book of

The Geocentric Theory of Ptolemy of


Alexandria is the theory of the structure of
the solar system in which the Earth is
assumed to be at the center of it all.

The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp is


one of Rembrandt’s most impressive group
portraits. The painting emphasizes the connection between criminality and an odious death.

The Heliocentric Theory was proposed by Nicolaus


Copernicus. This theory believes that the planets orbit
around the sun, including Earth.

The painting of Raphael Sanzio corresponds to the event


where Eve succumbed to the persuasion of the serpent (devil)
to taste the fruit from the Forbidden Tree. She also persuaded
her husband, Adam to eat the forbidden fruit despite the
warning from God.

The Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci is a male figure perfectly inscribed in a circle and a
square. This painting made by da Vinci illustrates what he believed to be a divine connection
between the human form and the universe.

ANALYSIS

What is meant by Humanities and Science?

The Humanities and Social Sciences are the study of


human behavior and interaction in social, cultural,
environmental, economic and political contexts. The Humanities and Social Sciences have a
historical and contemporary focus, from personal to global contexts, and consider challenges for
the future. Through studying Humanities and Social Sciences, students will develop the ability to
question, think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, make decisions and adapt to
change. Thinking about and responding to issues requires an understanding of the key historical,
geographical, political, economic and societal factors involved, and how these different factors
interrelate.

How do Humanities and Arts affect or influence events in the world?

The humanities and the arts are central to all human cultures throughout time. Their study
can facilitate deeper intercultural understanding and lay the groundwork for a civically engaged
life. They can also prepare you to think critically, act creatively, and succeed in a rapidly changing
world.

How does an artist express his/her art in the following?


a. Visual Art (painting, drawing, architecture)
Artists use different lines, shapes, and colors to express their feelings. Every artist
chooses their own colors, lines, and shapes that are meaningful for them. They use bold
colors and dramatic brush strokes to show their feelings.

b. Performing Arts (music, dance, drama)


Performing arts is a form of art where artists use their voices and bodies to convey
a message or artistic expression. Through performing, an artist uses their talent to make
a message to its audience and create a connection with them.

c. Linguistic (literary arts)


The artist expresses their thoughts and ideas through writing. They compose
literature and stories and they use words to express themselves and communicate
emotions to the readers.

APPLICATION

ART IN MY LIFE

Art is an all embracing notion (music, painting, theatre, literature and so on). Art had the
most important role in the development of the mankind. The first were found on walls of ancient
caves. So we can guess that painting was the first way of art. Painting is the most understandable
way of art, because it gives us the most full and vivid impression.

Art can be a challenge: both frustrating and rewarding at the same time, leading to a
sense of accomplishment — or a determination to do more. Art can be a message: of politics, of
peace, of brutality or beauty. Art can be an escape, an idealization, or simply a means of play.
Art can be anything and everything you let it be!

The importance of art in our daily lives is very similar to that of music. Just like art, music
can make life extremely joyful and can have a huge effect on our mood. In the workplace in
particular, music is something that can help people set the mood for what they are about to do.
If you have something hard or difficult to work on or are feeling tired, an energetic song will likely
wake you up and add some enthusiasm to the situation. Similarly, when stress is high, many
people find that relaxing to calming music is something that eases the mind.
