Probability Distribution Review For 12 Applied Math 1

The document is a review of probability distributions including binomial, Poisson, and normal distributions. It provides 5 example problems involving Poisson distribution calculations: (1) probability of 3 or more faulty razor blades in a packet of 5, (2) probability of 2 or more accidents at an intersection with 1000 cars and 0.1% accident rate, (3) probability all 50 phone lines are busy with 10% busy rate, (4) probability of 4 or fewer tickets divisible by 20 drawn from 200 with replacement, (5) probability of 2 men dying within 5 years from 400 men with 1.8% mortality rate.

XII-PROBABILITY - POISSON DISTRIBUTION

1. A manufacture knows that the razor blades he makes contain on the

average 0.5% defectives. He packs them in packets of 5. What is the
probability that a packet picked at random contains 3 or more faulty
blades. (Given 𝑒 −0.025 = 0.9753)
2. At a busy traffic intersection, the probability p of an individual car
having an accident is very small, say 𝑝 = 0.0001.However,during a
certain part of the day, a large number of cars, say 1000, pass through
the intersection. Under these conditions, what is the probability of two
or more accidents occurring during that period? (Use 𝑒 −1 = 0.9048)
3. There are 50 telephone lines in an exchange. The probability that any
one of them will be busy is 0.1. what is the probability that all the lines
are busy?
4. A box contains 200 tickets each bearing one of the numbers from 1 to
200. 20 tickets are drawn successively with replacement from the box.
Find the probability that at most 4 tickets bear numbers divisible by 20.
5. The probability that a man aged 35 years will die before reaching the
age of 40 years may be taken as 0.018. Out of a group of 400 men, now
aged 35years, what is the approximate probability that 2 men will die
within next 5 years?(use 𝑒 −7.2 = 0.000747)
