What Are Clouds? Reading (2 )
CCSS.RF.3.4
Day : _____________

A cloud is made of water drops or ice crystals floating in the

sky. There are many kinds of clouds. Clouds are an important
part of Earth’s weather.

How Do Clouds Form?

The sky can be full of water. But most of the time you can't
see the water. The drops of water are too small to see. They
have turned into a gas called water vapor. As the water vapor
goes higher in the sky, the air gets cooler. The cooler air
causes the water droplets to start to stick to things like bits
of dust, ice or sea salt.

What Are Some Types of Clouds?

Clouds get their names in two ways. One way is by where they
are found in the sky. Some clouds are high up in the sky. Low
clouds form closer to Earth's surface. In fact, low clouds can
even touch the ground. These clouds are called fog. Middle
clouds are found between low and high clouds. Another way
clouds are named is by their shape. Cirrus clouds are high
clouds. They look like feathers. Cumulus clouds are middle
clouds. These clouds look like giant cotton balls in the sky.
Stratus clouds are low clouds. They cover the sky like bed
sheets.

11
11
3
What Causes Rain?
Most of the water in clouds is in very small droplets. The
droplets are so light they float in the air. Sometimes those
droplets join with other droplets. Then they turn into larger
drops. When that happens, gravity causes them to fall to
Earth. We call the falling water drops “rain”. When the air is
colder, the water may form snowflakes instead. Freezing rain,
sleet or even hail can fall from clouds.

Why Does NASA Study Clouds?

Clouds are important for many reasons. Rain and snow are two
of those reasons. At night, clouds reflect heat and keep the
ground warmer. During the day, clouds make shade that can
keep us cooler. Studying clouds helps NASA better understand
Earth's weather. NASA uses satellites in space to study
clouds. NASA also studies clouds on other planets. Mars has
clouds that are like the clouds on Earth. But other planets
have clouds that aren't made of water. For example, Jupiter
has clouds made of a gas called ammonia.

Date: _____________ Andro and the Lion Reading ( 3 )
Day : _____________ CCSS.RF.3.4

In Rome there was once a poor slave whose name was

Andro. His master was a cruel man and so unkind to him
that Andro ran away. Andro hid in the woods for many
days, but there was no food to be found, and he grew
weak and sick. One day he crept into a cave and lay down
and soon he was fast asleep. After a while, a great noise
woke him up. A lion had come into the cave and was
roaring loudly. Andro was very afraid because he felt sure
that the beast would kill him. Soon, however, he saw that
the lion was not angry, but that he limped as though his
foot hurt him. Andro grew bold and took hold of the lion's
lame paw to see what was wrong. The lion stood quite still
and rubbed his head against the man's shoulder. He
seemed to say, — “I know that you will help me.”
Andro lifted the paw from the ground and saw that it was
a long, sharp thorn that was hurting the lion a lot. He
took the end of the thorn in his fingers, then he gave
a strong, quick pull, and out it came. The lion was full of
joy. He jumped about like a dog and licked the hands and
feet of his new friend.
Andro was not at all afraid of the lion, and, when night
came, he and the lion lay down and slept side by side. The
lion brought food to Andro every day, and the two became
13
13
such good friends that Andro was very happy in his new
life. One day some soldiers who were passing through the
wood found Andro in the cave. They knew who he was and
they took him back to Rome. It was the law at that time
that every slave who ran away from his master should be
made to fight a hungry lion. When the day came,
thousands of people crowded to see the sport of the slave
fighting the hungry lion. The door opened, and poor Andro
was brought in. He was very afraid because he could
already hear the roars of the lion. He looked up and saw
that there was no pity in the thousands of faces around
him. Then the hungry lion rushed in. With a single bound
he reached the poor slave. Andro gave a great cry, not of
fear, but of gladness. It was his old friend, the lion of
the cave. The people, who had expected to see the man
killed by the lion, were filled with wonder. They saw Andro
put his arms around the lion's neck; they saw the lion lie
down at his feet and lick them lovingly; they saw the great
beast rub his head against the slave's face as though he
wanted to be petted. They could not understand what it all
meant.

After a while they asked Andro to tell them about it. So

he stood up before them and, with his arm around the
lion’s neck, told how he and the beast had lived together
in the cave.
14
14
“I am a man,” he said, “but no man has ever befriended
me. This poor lion alone has been kind to me, and we love
each other as brothers.”
The people were good enough that they would not be cruel
to the poor slave now. “Live and be free!” they cried. “Live
and be free!”
Others cried, “Let the lion go free too! Give both of them
their liberty! And so Andro was set free, and the lion was
given to him. They lived together in Rome for many years.

Date: ____________ The Doctor Who Saved Reading ( 4 )
Day : _____________ London CCSS.RF.3.4

In the city of London about 150 years ago, many people

started to get very sick. The sickness they had was called
‘cholera’. The disease caused panic among Londoners because
nobody knew how to prevent it, or how to cure it. Lots of
doctors tried to figure out how to prevent people from getting
cholera. Most doctors thought that people got cholera from
breathing in polluted air. They told their patients to open
their windows and breathe in fresh air as much as possible.
However, this advice did not seem to work as more and more
people contracted the disease. Doctors also struggled to help
the patients who already had cholera. Some doctors told their
patients to drink lots of water, but that did not help. Some
told their patients to take certain medicines, but those did not
help, either. The doctors did not know what to do. John Snow
was a doctor and scientist who had a different idea. He
thought that cholera might have been spreading through the
water that people were drinking. Maybe polluted water was
making everyone sick. At first, other doctors and scientists
disregarded Doctor Snow’s idea. They believed that cholera
was spread through the air and that water was not the
problem. Nobody paid much attention to Dr. Snow.
When scientists have an idea that is not proven, it is called
a ‘theory’. Scientists then create experiments to test whether
their theories are true or not. Dr. Snow developed a plan

16
16
to test his theory about polluted water causing cholera.
Dr. Snow went to different neighborhoods in London and
tested their water. He also counted the number of sick people
in each neighborhood. It was just as he had thought! The
neighborhoods with the cleanest water had the fewest sick
people. The places with the dirtiest water had the greatest
number of sick people. This proved his theory that cholera was
spread through dirty water. Dr. Snow showed the results of
his study to the mayor of London and the other doctors. They
examined the evidence and realized that Dr. Snow was right.
All over London, people stopped drinking water that might be
polluted. Almost immediately, people stopped getting sick, and
the whole city was overjoyed. Doctors knew how to stop
cholera now. All it took was clean water.
Thanks to Dr. John Snow, we also know how to stop many
other sicknesses that can be spread through dirty water.
Cities are now designed to make sure everyone has a supply of
clean water. We would not know about the risks of dirty water
if it were not for Dr. John Snow’s scientific training, hard
work and discovery. Dr. Snow may not be as famous as Batman
or Wonder Woman, but he is a hero.
