Cosine and Sine Rule Proofs

This document provides worked solutions for proving the cosine rule and sine rule for triangles. It first considers the case where all angles of the triangle are acute, then the case where one angle is obtuse. The solutions show the steps to derive the cosine rule and sine rule formulas from basic trigonometric definitions and properties like Pythagoras' theorem.

3 Cosine and sine rule proofs

Try this worksheet after you have completed Exercise 3O.

If a triangle is not a right-angled triangle there are two possibilities

First case: all the angles of the triangle are acute.

Second case: there is one obtuse angle in the triangle.

Cosine rule proof

First case
All the angles of this triangle are acute.

C
The height of the triangle, h,
is drawn inside the triangle.
b a
h

A x O c–x B
c

You have to show that a2 = b2 + c2 − 2bc cos A

1 In triangle AOC use Pythagoras to complete the statement
h2 + x2 = ...........
2 In triangle AOC show that x = b cos A
3 In triangle BOC
a Use Pythagoras to write an expression involving a, c − x and h.
b Show that this expression can be written as a2 = h2 + x2 − 2xc + c2
c Using the results from 1, 2 and 3 show that a2 = b2 + c2 − 2bc cos A

Second case
One of the angles of this triangle is obtuse.
C
The height of the triangle, h,
is drawn outside the triangle.
b
a h

A c B x–c O
x

You have to show that a2 = b2 + c 2 − 2bc cos A

1 In triangle AOC use Pythagoras to complete the statement
h2 + x 2 = ...........
2 In triangle AOC show that x = b cos A
