Assignment

Write the Chemical Reaction, Complete and Net Ionic Equations similar to the example I have written in the ppt of the
following:

1. Lead nitrate and Hydrochloric acid

I. Chemical Reaction
- Lead nitrate reacts with hydrochloric acid producing lead chloride and nitric acid
II. Chemical Equation
- Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + 2HCl (aq) → PbCl2 (s) + 2HNO3 (aq)
III. Complete Ionic Equation
- Pb2+ (aq) + 2NO3- (aq) + 2H+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq) → PbCl2 (s) + 2H+ (aq) + 2NO3- (aq)
IV. Net Ionic Equation
- Pb2+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq) → PbCl2 (s)
V. Spectator Ions
- 2H+ and 2NO3- are spectator ions, because both sides (left and right) have them and eventually cancel
out.

2. Silver nitrate and Hydrochloric acid

I. Chemical Reaction
- Silver nitrate reacts with hydrochloric acid producing silver chloride and nitric acid
II. Chemical Equation
- AgNO3 (aq) + HCl (aq) → AgCl (s) + HNO3 (aq)
III. Complete Ionic Equation
- Ag+ (aq) + NO3- (aq) + H+ (aq) + Cl- (aq) → AgCl (s) + H+ (aq) + NO3- (aq)
IV. Net Ionic Equation
- Ag+ (aq) + Cl- (aq) → AgCl (s)
V. Spectator Ions
- NO3- and H+ are spectator ions, because both sides (left and right) have them and eventually cancel out.

3. Sulfuric acid and Sodium hydroxide

I. Chemical Reaction
- Sulfuric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide producing sodium sulfate and water
II. Chemical Equation
- H2SO4 (aq) + 2NaOH (aq) → Na2SO4 (aq) + 2H2O (l)
III. Complete Ionic Equation
- 2H+ (aq) + SO42- (aq) + 2Na+ (aq) + 2OH- (aq) → 2Na+ (aq) + SO42- (aq) + 2H2O (l)
IV. Net Ionic Equation
- 2H+ (aq) + 2OH- (aq) → 2H2O (l)
V. Spectator Ions
- SO42- and 2Na+ are spectator ions, because both sides (left and right) have them and eventually cancel
out.

4. Silver chloride and stannous chloride

I. Chemical Reaction
- Silver chloride reacts with stannous chloride producing stannic chloride and silver
II. Chemical Equation
- 2AgCl (s) + SnCl2 (aq) → SnCl4 (aq) + 2Ag (s)

III. Complete Ionic Equation

- 2AgCl (s) + Sn2+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq) → Sn4+ (aq) + 4Cl- (aq) + 2Ag (s)
IV. Net Ionic Equation
- 2AgCl (s) + Sn2+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq) → Sn4+ (aq) + 4Cl- (aq) + 2Ag (s)
V. Spectator Ions
- There are no spectator ions in this reaction because there are no ions being cancelled out.

5. Potassium chloride and Sodium acetate

I. Chemical Reaction
- Potassium chloride is mixed with sodium acetate producing potassium acetate and sodium chloride
II. Chemical Equation
- KCl (aq) + NaCH3COO (aq) → KCH3COO (aq) + NaCl (aq)
III. Complete Ionic Equation
- K+ (aq) + Cl- (aq) + Na+ (aq) + CH3COO- (aq) → K+ (aq) + CH3COOH- (aq) + Na+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)
IV. Net Ionic Equation
- There is no net ionic equation because all ions cancel out.
V. Spectator Ions
- All are spectator ions, thus, no precipitation reaction occured.

Color of Precipitates

6. What is the precipitate formed and its color in problem 1?

- The precipitate formed in problem 1 is lead chloride (PbCl2) and its color is white.

7. What is the precipitate formed and its color in problem 2?

- The precipitate formed in problem 2 is silver chloride (AgCl) and its color is white.

8. What is the precipitate formed and its color in problem 3?

- There is no precipitate formed in problem 3.

9. What is the precipitate formed and its color in problem 4?

- The precipitate formed in problem 4 is silver and its color is white.

10. What is the precipitate formed and its color in problem 5?

- No precipitate was formed in problem 5 because all of the ions are spectator ions.
