Introduction:
From the mid- 17th century there was no need for scientists and philosophers to be concerned whether or not their discoveries
conformed with the models of Christian Theology, so this resulted to the birth of Scientific Revolution which challenged all beliefs with no scientific
basis. This pertains to that period of massive change in ideas and beliefs. This went on up to the later part of the 18 th century when the world had
seen changes in political and social order in society and that was specifically a result of the French Revolution and the contamination of the
American colonies that revolted against their colonizers namely the 13 British colonies in North America that led to American revolution. Lastly the
series of changes were ashered in by the new social and economic change brought about by the transition from agricultural and commercial to
industrial one.

This module will guide prospective teachers of World History to develop a critical mind and be able to teach the subject using analytical
thinking skills/ critical thinking.

I. The Introduction of new ideas in Europe was a result of the following factors: period of explorations, spirit of curiosity brought about by the
Renaissance period , the challenges posed to the teachings of the church during the Reformation, and the emergence of the Scientific
Revolution and the Enlightenment. In scientific Revolution, the ideas of Copernicus, Galilleo, Newton, Brahe, Kepler, Descartes and Bacon,
became valuable in rectifying the dominant view of nature of the universe by explaining the nature of the Earth. Equally significant were the
contributions of Vesalius, Leeuwenhoek, Linnaeus and Harvey in the field. In the period of Enlightenment, Philosophers attempted to explain
the nature of human nature, with the objective of formulating ideas on governance, education,
democracy and other social issues. The legacy of enlightenment in the arts can be seen in the geniuses such as Mozart, Beethoven and
Haydn. The use of reason and man’s role as the architect of his destiny were the greatest Legacy of the Scientific Revolution II. The revolutions
in America, France and Latin America were considered as the practical applications of the ideas formed during the Enlightenment. The
American Revolution is significant because it established the bases for democracy which prevails in various countries of the world up to the
present. The French Revolution was inspired by American Revolution and is considered an application of concepts such as liberty, equality
and fraternity. The Revolution in Latin America is significant because it paved the way for colonies to regain their freedom from the European
forces. In the three revolutions, the intellectuals played an important role in the emergence and acceptance of liberal ideas which became
the bases of their struggle.
III. The Industrial revolution refers to the changes from an economy based on agriculture and commerce to an economy based on industry. It
started in England from the 18th to the 19th centuries. Certain conditions could be found in England such as the emergence of capital,
developments in agriculture and the growth in population which became the source of labor force were significant in the rise of Industrial
Revolution. The development of the Industrial Revolution can be traced to a number of factors such as the characteristic of England’s
economy, population growth, technological inventions and improvement in transportation and communication system. The changes in
agriculture, industry and transportation affected the way of life of the people. Two social classes were likewise developed , the prolitariat
and the bourgeoisie which became importance factors in the economy of the nations in the world up to the present.

Abstraction:
The Scientific Revolution played a major part in this transformation. David Wootton has described (here) how a well-educated European’s view of
the natural world changed from one century to the next. The world of 1600 was magical, inhabited by demons and witches, full of portents and
promises that only cabalists and astrologers could decipher. The world of 1700 was still mysterious, but not magical — the demons and witches had
been banished; the rainbow was evidence of the refraction of light and not a sign from God; the universe was as orderly as the pendulum clock in
the hall. The world held mysteries, not because it was innately unknowable, but because the attempt to understand it through disciplined and
evidence-constrained reasoning had only recently begun.
