Detailed Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is for a math lesson on polynomial functions. It includes objectives, references, competencies, materials, and procedures. The methodology section outlines teacher and student activities to review polynomials, establish the purpose of the lesson, present examples, discuss concepts and skills, and provide a practical application problem. Key concepts are that a polynomial has variables with non-negative integer exponents, and they can determine degree, leading coefficient and constant term.

Detailed Lesson Plan

For Math 10

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson the learners are expected to:

a. Identify polynomial functions

b. Illustrate polynomial functions
c. Solve problem involving polynomial functions

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Polynomial Functions

B. References: Mathematics Learner’s Module, page 99 of 404
C. Competencies: Critical Thinking
D. Instructional materials: Power-Point Presentation, Whiteboard

III. Methodology/Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity

Preliminary Activities

“Good morning class!” “Good morning, ma’am!”

“Let us pray first.” (One representative will lead

the prayer.)
“Now, I will check the attendance”
“Say present if you are here.” (Students say present as the
teacher calls in their name.)

A. Reviewing prior knowledge about the lesson

Determining whether each of the following is a

polynomial or not. Answers:
1. x 2+ 2 x +1 Student 1: Polynomial
1 Student 2: Not Polynomial
2. −2 x+3 x 2 Student 3: Polynomial
3. 3 x−1−2 x−3 Student 4: Not polynomial
1
3 Student 5: Not Polynomial
4. x −2.3 x+5
2
5. 14 x

Students’ answers:
B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson 1. f ( x )=6 x 3−4 x 2 +8 x
3
Using the following polynomial functions 6
1. f ( x )=6 x 3 +8 x−4 x 2 0
2. f ( x )=2−11 x + 4 x 2 2. f ( x )=4 x 2−11 x+2
2
4
 What is the standard form of the polynomial? 2
 What is the degree of the polynomial?
 What is the leading coefficient?
 And lastly, what is the constant term?

C. Presenting examples

1. The standard form of the polynomial function

f ( x )=6 x 3 +8 x−4 x 2 is f ( x )=6 x 3−4 x 2 +8 x
which is the terms are arrange in decreasing
power of x. The highest power of its term is 3.
Therefore, the degree of the polynomial is 3. The
leading coefficient is 6 and the constant term is
0.

2. The standard form of the polynomial function

2 2
f ( x )=2−11 x + 4 x is f ( x )=4 x −11 x+2 .
The highest power of its term is 2. Therefore, the
degree of the polynomial is 2. The leading
coefficient is 4 and the constant term is 2.

3. The polynomial function y=x ( x 2−5 ) can be

written in the standard form y=x 3−5 x . The
highest power of its term is 3. Therefore, the
degree of the polynomial is 3. The leading
coefficient is 1 and the constant term is 0.

4. The polynomial function y=x ¿ can be written

in the standard form y=x 3−6 x2 +9 x .
The highest power of its term is 3. Therefore, the
degree of the polynomial is 3. The leading
coefficient is 1 and the constant term is 0.

5. The polynomial function f ( x )=x −2 −12 is not

polynomial because it has a negative exponent.

D. Discussing new concept and practicing new

skills

Answer Activity 2 Fix and Move Them, then Fill

me up, page 102
E. Discussing new concept and practicing new
skills

Analysis:
When are functions polynomials? How can
we determine the degree of a polynomial
function? And how we can determine which is
the leading coefficient and constant term in a
polynomial function?

F. Practical application

A demographic predicts that the

population, P, of a town t year from now can be
modeled by the function
P ( t ) =6 t 4−5 t 3+ 200t +12 000. What will the
population on the town be two (2) years from
now?

G. Generalizations

A polynomial function is a function of a form

n n−1 n−2
P ( x ) =an x + an−1 x +a n−2 x + …+a1 x+ a0 , an ≠ 0 ,

where n is a nonnegative integer, n as a positive integer

implies that:
a. n is not negative
b. n is not zero
c. n is not fraction
d. n is not a radical, and
e. n is not imaginary

a 0 , a 1 , … , an are real numbers called coefficient, a n x n is

the leading term, a n is the leading coefficient, and a 0 is
the constant term.

IV. Evaluation

Direction: Identify the polynomial functions from the given set of functions. Give your
reasons
1. f ( x )=2−x+ 3 x 2−4 x 4
2. P ( x ) =√ 5 x 7 +2 x3 −x
3. y=−x 4 +16
4. f ( x )= √ 5 x+ 3
5. y=x −3 + x 2−12 x

V. Assignment

Read the problem carefully and answer the given question.

You are designing candle-making kits. Each kit contains 25 cubic inches of candle wax
and a mold for making a pyramid-shaped candle with a square base. You want the height of
the candle to be 2 inches less than the edge of the base. What should be the dimensions of
your candle mold be? Show a mathematical procedure in determining the dimensions.
