Let’s Elaborate
Equations Transformable to Quadratic Equations
There are equations that are transformable to quadratic equations. These
equations may be given in different forms. Hence, the procedures in transforming
these equations to quadratic equations may also be different.
Once the equations are transformed to quadratic equations, these can be solved
using the different techniques in solving quadratic equations such as extracting square
roots, factoring, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula.
Solving Quadratic Equations That Are Not Written in Standard Form
Example 1: Solve 𝑥𝑥(𝑥𝑥– 5) = 24
1. Transform the quadratic equation into 𝑥𝑥(𝑥𝑥– 5) = 24
standard form. 𝑥𝑥 2 − 5𝑥𝑥 = 24
𝑥𝑥 2 − 5𝑥𝑥 − 24 = 0
2. Find the roots of quadratic equation Let’s use factoring
using any of the methods of solving (𝑥𝑥 − 8)(𝑥𝑥 + 3) = 0
quadratic equations. 𝑥𝑥 − 8 = 0 𝑥𝑥 + 3 = 0
𝑥𝑥 = 8 𝑥𝑥 = −3
3. Check the values of the variable For 𝑥𝑥 = 8 For 𝑥𝑥 = −3
obtained by substituting each in the 𝑥𝑥(𝑥𝑥– 5) = 24 𝑥𝑥(𝑥𝑥– 5) = 24
original equation. 8(8– 5) = 24 −3(−3– 5) = 24
64– 40 = 24 9 + 15 = 24
24 = 24 24 = 24
TRUE TRUE
The values of 𝑥𝑥 that will satisfy the equation 𝑥𝑥(𝑥𝑥– 5) = 24 are 8 and -3. Thus, the
solution set is {8, −3}.
5
Example 2: Solve (𝑥𝑥 + 6)2 + (𝑥𝑥 − 4)2 = 58
1. Transform the quadratic equation (𝑥𝑥 + 6)2 + (𝑥𝑥 − 4)2 = 58
into standard form. (𝑥𝑥 2 + 12𝑥𝑥 + 36) + (𝑥𝑥 2 − 8𝑥𝑥 + 16) = 58
𝑥𝑥 2 + 12𝑥𝑥 + 36 + 𝑥𝑥 2 − 8𝑥𝑥 + 16 = 58
𝑥𝑥 + 𝑥𝑥 2 + 12𝑥𝑥 − 8𝑥𝑥 + 36 + 16 − 58 = 0
2
2𝑥𝑥 2 + 4𝑥𝑥 − 6 = 0
𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 − 3 = 0
2. Find the roots of quadratic equation Let’s use completing the square
using any of the methods of solving 𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 − 3 = 0
quadratic equations. 𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 + ___ = 3 + ____
𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 + 1 = 3 + 1
(𝑥𝑥 + 1)2 = 4
(𝑥𝑥 + 1)2 = √4
𝑥𝑥 + 1 = ±2
𝑥𝑥 + 1 = 2 𝑥𝑥 + 1 = −2
𝑥𝑥 = 2 − 1 𝑥𝑥 = −2 − 1
𝑥𝑥 = 1 𝑥𝑥 = −3
3. Check the values of the variable
obtained by substituting each in the
For 𝑥𝑥 = 1 For x = -3
original equation. 2 2 (𝑥𝑥 + 6)²
(𝑥𝑥 + 6) + (𝑥𝑥 − 4)
= 58 + (𝑥𝑥 − 4)² = 58
(1 + 6)² + (1 − 4)² (−3 + 6)² + (−3
= 58 − 4)² = 58
(7)² + (−3)² = 58 (3)² + (−7)²
49 + 9 = 58 = 58
58 = 58 9 + 49 = 58
TRUE 58 = 58
TRUE
The values of 𝑥𝑥 that will satisfy the equation (𝑥𝑥 + 6)2 + (𝑥𝑥 − 4)2 = 58 are 1 and -3.
Thus, the solution set is{1, −3}.

𝑥𝑥 2 − 2𝑥𝑥 − 16𝑥𝑥 + 80 = 0
𝑥𝑥 2 − 18𝑥𝑥 + 80 = 0
6
2. Find the roots of quadratic Let’s use factoring

methods of solving quadratic (𝑥𝑥 − 10)(𝑥𝑥 − 8) = 0
equations. 𝑥𝑥 − 10 = 0 𝑥𝑥 − 8 = 0

The values of 𝑥𝑥 that will satisfy the equation 𝑥𝑥 + 𝑥𝑥−2 = 1 + 𝑥𝑥−2 are 2 and 5. But
the solution set is { 5} because 𝑥𝑥 = 2 is an extraneous root.
An extraneous root or solution is a solution of an equation derived from an
original equation. However, it is not a solution of the original equation.
